Excellent, but somewhat dated Clint Eastwood movie. Jonathan Hemlock (Clint Eastwood) has made a living as a professional killer. He has become a wealthy man with an extensive art collection as a result, but has grown tired of killing. His handlers just won't let him go, and pull him in for just one more job with an offer too good to pass. An attempt was unsuccessfully made on his life on another job and he was never able to find out who it was. He intends to set things right. This job includes a sanction on a climb of the Eiger, one of the most difficult mountains in the world to climb. He needs to get into shape for this climb. His old friend George Kennedy owns a place where he trains to get into shape for the Eiger. An old nemesis, Miles Mellough, a gay double agent shows up and tries to take Hemlock out, but both he and his queer friend are gruesomely dispatched. Training complete, the climbing team assembles in the Swiss Alps. All he knows is that one of the team members is his target, but doesn't know which one it is. My impression was that Eastwood was the target and his participation in the climb was solely to get him there. The climbing sequences are great and the scenery is beautiful, in this slightly over the top "James Bond" sort of action movie. The ending is somewhat of a surprise and will entertain you.Read full review
I first saw this movie in the theater in Toledo, OH where I grew up. It was positively breathtaking on te big screen, and I finally recalled how scary the climbing scenes were and the excitement that they held for the viewer. Knowing now that Clint Eastwood did the climbing scenes and that much of the show was filmed in the Swiss Alps at the REAL Eiger, which had claimed dozens of climbers' lives over the years... Well, it gave me even more respect for this fine actor and director. The final scene remembers an actual event in the past at the railroad tunnel window, very similar to the part of the movie it is in. So, easy to see that the producers and actors definitely did their homework for this movie, and the results were a first-rate picture. Of course there are the typical Eastwood fare of tough-guy subplots, and nitwit toadies from the sleazy director of the intelligence agency to the largely inept messenger simply reinforced the fact that this is an EASTWOOD movie. It's all right because the scenery, the exciting climbing scenes, and the final surprise ending allow us to enjoy a pretty good story, while being able to fall back on all of the Eastwood stock side story lines. A good five bucker, on my scale of how much I'd pay to see it again at the theater....Read full review
Great story, full of suspense and intrigue. Acting was superb and convincing. The scenery was outstanding both in Arizona and Switzerland. Well paced for a 70's film and of course Clint was excellent in his role. Everything about this film was great.
