'The Bloody Judge' is a fascinating movie. First off, if you don't like European movies from the 70's (like the Hammer films that made Christopher Lee famous), simply don't buy it. Those that do, will see a film, that is very well restored and as far as I know completely intact. What made the film really interesting to me, is how there seems to be a real conflict in direction the film was intended. On one hand, you see Jess Franco trying to bring in his usual sleaze and cheese, and on the other hand is Christopher Lee's attempt at bringing the titular character to life in a bio pic. The two actually work well together and make a pretty good movie.
If you're a Christopher Lee fan, this movie is up your alley. Based on a real historical personality, this film is a good jab at the exploitation of religion by beaureaucrats of every stripe. Has one inexplicable and out-of-context lesbian scene that is obviously thrown in for the more depraved viewers among us. Low-budget, but great locations.
