I hadn't seen Vincente Minnelli's 1960 grand melodrama "Home from the Hill" for at least 40 years, and I'm happy to report that it holds up generally well. Robert Mitchum's domineering, womanizing self-proclaimed emperor of a small, East Texas town is one of his best performances, and he's matched by Eleanor Parker as his long suffering wife, who's kept her bedroom door locked for 17 years since the birth of their son (George Hamilton), whom she has "protected" from the influence of his macho-driven father. Minnelli's relaxed pacing (the film is a tad long at 150 minutes) is balanced with the richness of detail in setting and character. Long-burning passions, youthful passions, adultery, illegitimate children, murder, greed. Name your favorite sin, and you'll find it in "Home From the Hill," played out on a scale that would likely have Shakespeare give a nod and wink of approval -- if Shakespeare was from East Texas. The film looks great in its Warner Archive Blu-Ray transfer, and the stereo re-mastering of Bronislau Kaper's score is a pleasure to hear.Read full review
