A Step Up From Other One-Cup Coffee Makers
This coffee maker isn't perfect, but it's actually an improvement over the several Black & Decker (B&D) one-cup coffee makers I have had over the past 20 years or so. Let's get the few negative items out of the way first: 1.) A little more coffee is needed to make the same strength coffee compared to the B&D. I attribute this to the "Melitta-style permanent filter used in the B&D compared to the shallower filter used with this unit. 2.) This unit has two permanent filters that must be rinsed out after each cup compared to only one with the B&D. 3.) The dual-height cup rest doesn't fit my tall coffee cup in either position. To avoid splashing I needed to use a special rest made from a cheap electrical box to get my cup up high enough so splashing is no a problem. But I think this coffee maker is superior to the B&D is several ways. 1.) The 2-stage permanent filter removes more of the sediment that the B&D allowed to pass into the cup. 2.) This unit is very quiet compared to the noise that the B&D unit makes. 3.) If you forget to put the water into this unit, a sensor merely flashes an indicator and turns the unit off without any heating at all; the B&D must go through a short heating cycle, with accompanying noise, before shutting itself off. If water is added too soon after the B&D shuts off this way, it spits and pops until the heating element cools off. 4.) Water is much easier to pour neatly into this unit than the B&D. 5.) All my tall travel mugs will work with this unit, not just the shorter ones. 6.) The stainless exterior is much easier to keep clean than the black plastic body of the B&D. 7.) This unit can handle up to about 14 oz. of water per cup, although a smaller amount can be used as desired. Apparently a small amount of water is retained in this coffee maker, so be sure to follow the instructions before making the first cup. Weak coffee
I was looking forward to having a single cup coffee maker that didn't require pods. However, even brewing on the bold setting and using the correct amount of water and coffee, the coffee was too weak for my taste. I guess I could try using a lot less water and the amount of coffee for 14 oz and see the results. Even with two fine mesh filters, there was sludge in the bottom of the cup. Scoop strong!
My new scoop coffeemaker works well. Attractive, well made and thought out. Brews a cup of coffee quickly, although maybe too quickly. I seem to get a weak cup of coffee after each brew using a heavy dose of quality coffee and setting brewer to the bold brew setting! I foresee this brewer using a lot of ground coffee which makes it expensive to use. I'm not a heavy coffee drinker but want a good quality strong cup when I do have some. This is just what I needed for most of my coffee cups and days. It's faster than a toaster (90 seconds) and easy to rinse 3 parts clean. Cleaning takes about the time of rinsing a cup.
