This is a classic. I read it years ago, and wanted to experience it again. Purchase price was outrageously low. This is a BIG book, easy to read, a must for Tolkien fans. Almost as magical as Harry Potter. Of course, it is King Arthur and Avalon, not Hogwarts.

The Mists of Avalon was one of those books that I couldn't put down. The author has a way of making the book so engrossing that you must keep reading. It is a fascinating study of the old religion versus the new religion through the lives of the legendary characters of King Author, Queen Guinevere, Morgaine, and many more. As a Christian, I could not agree with the pagan values of Morgaine. In particular, the common practice of giving up their children for other people to foster seems cold-hearted to me. However, the idea that people may do as they wish without the restrictions of the morals of Christianity helped me understand why it was so hard for the ancient Britains to totally give up their religion. Nature worship, blood sacrifices, fertility rites, etc. appeal to the baser nature of man in many of us. The Christian Church did its share to alienate people in the book, although in the end, the two religions seemed to almost merge as the Moon Goddess evolves into the Virgin Mary. The book keeps driving home the philosphy that all religions are basically the same, and all gods are one. This I do not agree with. Read it as a story and nothing else. It is very entertaining, but not to be taken too seriously.Read full review
This is the tale to beat all tales. A tale of legends and magick. For anyone who loves the tales of Avalon and King Arthur, this books time has come. The first book to tell the tales of this long ago time through the eyes and hearts of the women who lived it. Masterfully written this tale not only shows that Morrgaine was NOT evil, it shows the way that the powers that be can corrupt, regardless of intentions. This tale will break your heart, make your heart sing with joy and will give you unbridled hope for the way that things should be. I could not put the book down! I had surgery and was about 1/4 of the way through the book and once I woke up from surgery all I wanted to do was finish my book! I spent all night in the hospital reading! I am so very glad that this book was written. Not many authors have the vision that Marion Zimmer Bradley had! We miss you terribly Marion! May the Lady bless and keep you safe and happy in your Summerland until you decide once more to come live among us.Read full review

This book started me down a wonderful road filled with dreams, success, failure, love, tragedy and sight. Highly recommend, just get past the first few pages and you'll feel the characters come to life like only M.Z.B can do.
