  • Why you are crazy if you don't buy a Japanese sharpening stone

At the age of 62, I have owned more knives that I can count in my lifetime. That includes being a Boy Scout in the 1960s. I have owned. Sharpening stones in my life and I have never found a sharpening stone until now that worked as well as these Japanese water stones do. Where I would once go through half-a-dozen stones and spent hours using them, I can go through 3 sharpening stones and take the worst knife possible excluding chips in the blade, and turn it into a samurai sword. Cuts that I could not easily make with any other knife, I can easily make with a knife sharpened by one of my Japanese water stones. Take the worst knife, rusted out with a 220 Stone, sharpening with a 1000 grit Stone, and polish it with the 6000 grit Stone. You now have the sharpest knife you have ever owned in your entire life!

  • Fabulous! 6000 side is amazing but get a nauraga stone.

This stone is fabuous. It makes a good slurry on the 1000 grit side and that makes sharpening a blade easy as acn be. I currently have a very inepensive 8" chef's knife that I put on my 180/280 stone and got a little improvement. Then my King arrived and I resharpened it with th 280 and then the 1000. The difference was astounding. The knife cut wonderfully with no feeling of catching when I was trimming the cored off of large cabbage. I sharpened my new Mercer Genesis 5" utility knife, a knife I was initially unhappy with until it met my stones. Again, using the 180/280 did a tiny bit but the 1000 grit made this into a great knife! I was able to hand slice guanciale wth it into thin slices with ease. The backa nd forth slicing was controlled and easy. I have not mentioned the 6000 grit side as I am still waiting for my nauraga stone which you need for any stone 4000+ {Update: the nauraga stone came and I used the 6000 side and it was a joy. I can't believe how sharp the knife is. After the 6000 side I stropped it twice, once rough side and the other fine. The knife is now wonderfully sharp. It is a cheap winco forged knife and it cuts like my Mercers do. Getting ready to do the rest of my knives!} Be suer to soak the sone until it holds a coating of water on top of the 1000 stone and then re-wet it liberally.

  • Good starting stone for newbies

Hello world. This is my first time using a whetstone, so this review can be biased and pros might have a more advanced perspective. I used these stones to sharpen Farber ware knifes that have been in use for atleast 7 years. The stone worked it magic right away. It will sharpen the knife no doubt, but not for creating a new sharpening edge. Pros: 1. The stone took maybe a minute to soak. So you're ready to start working on your knives asap. 2. Skill level required : 2/10, just get those angles aligned to sharpen your knife. 3. It's a very user friendly and forgiving stone. Your errors will be forgiven and you practice your angle. 4. I sharpened 5 knives altogether. Cons. 1. The base is flimsy. Tip : It comes with a base holder that needs a good support. Place a base on a towel before securing the stones on the base for use. 2. It's a Japanese product so obviously the instructions were in Japanese I'm assuming. I prefer product specific instructions in English just in case. Thanks for reading my reviews world.

  • Woodworker: Very good value for money, not the quickest whetstone to use. Size is OK for chisels

Decently flat, so OK to start with, needs a bit of work. Needs a LOT of soaking before starting, very prone to cuts otherwise. Not the best quality out there, but so far, great value for money. 1000/6000 is a good combination, though I suggest having a leather strap with abrasive as well, since polishing is a bit time consuming.

  • It's a good addition to my tool kit.

I am just learning to use this type of stone well, but so far it seems to produce better results than anything I have used in the past.

  • A good value starter stone

I am new to stone sharpening and I thought this stone was a good value from a company with a strong reputation. The product arrived in perfect condition, which I had read was a concern. It was a bit smaller than I expected but large enough for me to do an 8 inch chef knife. All of the documentation on the packaging is written in Japanese but there is plenty of online information about proper usage. After a little practice I was able to create a very sharp edge on my chef knife.

  • Great Combination Stone

The stone combo is exactly as described and just what I wanted. The 1000 grit is fairly soft and will need periodic flattening depending on the amount of use. The 6000 grit is much harder and quickly put a razor sharp edge on my carbon blade.

  • Knives are super sharp!

Seems to work very well and is easy to use. I've never sharpened knives with a whetstone before so it took me some getting used to. There's a learning curve to it, but now my kitchen knives have never been sharper!

  • Good quality and value.

I bought this as a gift for my son, because I have Owned the same model stone for 40 years, and it does a very good job sharpening quality knives and edge tools for woodworking. It has not worn out yet.

  • Great sharpening stone

I had no idea it had two grits. It is placed in a plastic tray but it lifts out and flips over with a medium grit on one side and a super fine grit on the other. It is a true waterstone on the fine side.
