  • Not as good as it looks.

Having hooked it up and configured it to how I wanted, I found a few flaws, that are not in any descriptions or manuals. 1.....It does NOT support NAT loopback 2.....WiFi is VERY hard to connect to, even if the WiFi is unprotected, the signal keeps dropping out at random, and it can take hours just to try and connect a WiFi device to it. 3.....There is no visual indication on the front panel for the LAN ports. 4.....Using custom firmware such as OpenWrt is NOT recommended, even though I did successfully flash the firmware with OpenWrt, I had to re-flash the original firmware because OpenWrt did not make provisions for NAT loopback, and the WiFi when using OpenWrt, still dropped out at random. 5.....Compared to other routers, Netgear and Cisco, the Dlink DIR-835 is very slow in downloading a webpage, even a page as simple at google. As an IT tech, I have access to other routers, and I tried other routers and they worked excellent, so I tried another DIR-835 and I still got the same result, it seems this particular model has major flaws in it's hardware, it's OK if you want a dual band (2.4 and 5Ghz) for surfing and hispeed gaming, but that's about all it's fit for.

  • very good but could be a bit better

i bought this router to install ddwrt on it.. for my surprise it also supports openwrt which i prefer, the only downside of this is that it has no AC, it only support wireless N.

  • Can be flashed with DD-WRT.

It's a more than competent dual band router and can be had used for less than $20. Gigabit and USB ports, three antenna for range, on/off switch if you don't want to unplug to reset. Best of all version A1 can be flashed with DD-WRT opening up a whole range of possibilities not available with stock the D-Link OS. Even without DD-WRT, I was using it as an Access Point to extend the wireless in my home. I put it on the first floor under the PS4 and laptop's location on the second floor and both were getting a 100% signal.

  • Nice inexpensive router

The DIR-835 has been a reliable router, in use for about 2.5 years. The first thing I did when I received it was to install DD-WRT build r23919. The features of DD-WRT provide everything I need in a home router. I set up access restrictions for the kids' devices, limiting their access by day of the week and time. It reliably supports the full internet bandwidth my cable modem provides, currently over 70Mbit. I have a 4TB USB hard drive connected to the USB port which is used by the scheduled backups on all the computers. There are no connection issues anywhere in our two-story house. My router is a factory refurbished unit purchased direct from D-Link. I recently bought a second one as a backup, just because it was such a good deal. I configured DD-WRT to the same version and backed up my configuration and restored it to the new router, so if it ever fails I can simply swap units and be up and running immediately. I would buy this router again (and I did).

  • Inexpensive Dual Band Gigabit Wifi Router

I bought this router refurbished because I wanted something to replace an older N router but with dual band WiFi and gigabit Ethernet ports. DD-WRT is trivial to install on this router. Power LED stays orange (unlike stock which turns green once booted.). After installing DD-WRT (so I don't know how the stock firmware performs) LanBench gives 800+ Mbps transfer over the LAN Ethernet to LAN Ethernet, 200+ Mbps transfer from LAN Ethernet to computer on switch connected to WAN port (I made the DIR-835 a NAT-like-subnet on another gigabit Ethernet network (TP-Link SG108 Gigabit switch) so the connection was to another computer on the same switch. and I can easily get 900+Mbps transfer across only that switch with two computers, so I think the 200+ Mbps was from the router itself). I get 115Mbps download (ISP says I have 100 Mbps internet), and 11 Mbps upload (ISP throttled) on Speedtest over Ethernet. I get 80-90 Mbps download, same upload on Speedtest over 5Ghz WiFi in a crowded WiFi apartment environment. I get 35-40 Mbps download / 11 Mbps upload on 2.3 Ghz WiFi. Either way for the refurbished price I am very happy with the performance of this router, and the availability of the enhanced features of DD-WRT.
