Looking for ways to take your percussion talents to the next level? Check out the Gibraltar Deluxe Classic SC-DLSTO Snare Drum Throw-Off. This drum strainer gives you optimal control over your sound. It’s engineered to fit drums that have 1.5 inches of space between the screw holes. This product can also extend the functional life of your drum. The throw measures 4 inches by 7 inches by 1.5 inches and weighs 8.8 ounces. In addition to the drum strainer setup with pre-installed mounting holes, you’ll receive assembly instructions and screws. The screws are supplied in different lengths, including long screws for wooden shells and shorter screws for metal shells. Drums that use snare strings are prized for their rat-a-tat-tat, staccato sound. All the different parts of the drum contribute to its signature sound, and this throw-off lets you add your personal touch. Snare drums are double-headed and have snare wires -- which are nicknamed “snares” -- across the tops of their heads that contribute to their unique sound. These snares interact with the head when the drum is struck, and this produces the drum’s distinctive reverberation. Snare throws like the Gibraltar Throw-Off allow you to adjust the tension of the snare wires. That enables you to get precisely the effect you want to achieve when your sticks hit the drum. The part actually performs three functions. First, it’s a mechanism that allows you to engage or disengage the snare strings. Secondly, its butt plate allows you to anchor each snare to the opposite side of the drum’s head. Finally, the SC-DLSTO throw includes an adjuster device so that you can fine-tune the tension of each snare against the butt plate. Gibraltar has designed its throw-offs to provide smooth, reliable performance. Experienced drummers replace their standard snare throws with models like this one so that they don’t have to worry about them jamming up during a show. Your throw can hold snare wires tightly against the head if that’s the sound you’re aiming for. Conversely, it can also keep the strings a little slacker if you want a more muffled, acoustic effect. There’s not one set place to position your unit either. Many drummers put their snare drums on stands so that the throw-off is on the right side at the 3 o’clock position. This position is particularly favored by right-handed drummers, because it makes the strainer easy to find and adjust while drumming. Left-handed drummers tend to prefer the 9 o’clock position. This product lets you customize the setup to your playing style. Strings break from time to time, and when more than five have broken, it’s probably time to replace the set. The Gibraltar Snare Throw can be a valuable tool for helping you align your new strings properly. When your SC-DLSTO is fully engaged, your strings should all line up in the center of the drumhead. Great working solid built unit.
I must say I was more than a little surprised when I received this. It is very well built. It has nice chrome on it. It functions smoothly and quietly. It is even built to resemble a lug similar to Grestch or Slingerland type lugs. I have had some high ended snare drums that didn't have a snare throw off that was built as well as this one. It is 1 5/16" on center between the two mounting screws. It has rubber insulators to keep from having direct contact with the shell. All in all it is a very well thought out, simple and functional throw off. Smooth Action
I'm a live player (as well as a session guy) and I use multiple snares live and have to have reliable equipment. The standard snare throws that come with snares rust up (I tour and sometimes you play through the rain) and the standard throw offs rust up and jam. So far the Gibraltar has given me smooth and reliable action. And I've waxed it to help keep off the rust (yes I did that to the standard throws as well). Like others reported, the mount screws were way too long for my application(or any metal shell)- 70s Pearl b4514 brass- but once you replace the screws with 3/8" lengths, and the washers since they are married to the original screws, you've got a serious, heavy duty throw- waay better than a lot of OEM pieces(especially old ones).
