Good photo printer but canon is less than helpful at least on web

I tried setting up and followed instructions. Got nowhere, in order to install drivers and software I had to go to canon download page, not what the manual said. I finally got that so computer recognized printer. Then it said put in a new ink cartridge, it was a new one in it, pulled it out and it had been wound all the way to empty. I bought this printer so that I could print out pictures. My family and I were complaining that we do not have any pictures because they are all digital.
