    It fits just fine.

    I took the chance on buying the shift joint for my 2001 Forester even though it says this one if for the newer models. The only difference I could see is the older model joint has a small tab with a hole for an external neutral centering spring. In my case, the spring was long gone due to rust and the internal transmission spring is more than strong enough. Basically it's about $20 bucks cheaper to buy this one versus the one for the older model year cars and it fits and performs just as it should.

    Helps sloppy shifting

    Don't forget the spring pin. My car had a bolt connecting the linkage joint to the transmission which still allowed quite a bit of slop, so I have to go back in to install the spring pin I ordered which should have been there in the 1st place.
