The movie is good but overrated, however. It flopped on original release. It is dripping with sentimentality and American idealism. The Hollywood ending is as sappy as it gets. The last half hour it turns into a fantasy, which is fine. But one can't help but wonder what it could have been if it had a more realistic ending. It was in the public domain so long and played ad nauseum during Christmas because it was free. That's why it is considered a Christmas movie even though 3/4s of the movie has nothing to do with Christmas. This movie simply wormed its way into the American psyche from shear repetition! Then out of a familiarity and acceptance of the movie's sentimental and typically American ideology someone claimed it was great and everyone else just sort of agreed!
