I've been looking forward to adding both seasons 1 & 2 of "Primal" to my DVD collection. I caught a free showing of a 2-part episode on Roku TV and was mesmerized throughout. It reminded me of forebears such as Alley Oop, Tarzan, Tor, and Devil Dinosaur, except with no English dialogue and is even more intense. There are aspects which even remind me of some of the literary works of Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Despite having no narration, I could easily understand everything that was unfolding onscreen. I actually bought the adventures of Spear and Fang and received both seasons a day apart. I'm familiar with Genndy Tartakovskys' other works consisting of "The Powerpuff Girls" and "Samurai Jack", but this is the one which compelled me to purchase both seasons as soon as they became available on DVD. For me, this is Tartakovskys' "magnum opus" and finest hour. Tartakovsky truly pioneers in the field of animation and demonstrates what can happen when animation is used to tell stories beyond the confines of "Saturday morning fare". The graphic violence and the struggle for survival isn't what I would recommend for very young viewers, but it is essential for furthering the medium of animation beyond "childrens' cartoons". In many ways, this is some of the most thoughtful, intelligent, and mature storytelling which ranks up there with the best of Japanese anime. I highly recommend both seasons of "Primal" without reservations.
First, Unlike Mr.Tartakovsky's other animated series (Invader Zim, Samurai Jack) this is NOT a film for young kids!
That being said, It's got relatable characters, and an engaging story line. Different from a lot of other animated pre-historic series, you're always wanting to know 'what happens next" ?!!
A highly recommended series that would make a great gift!
If you’re a fan of Conan and even Frank Frazetta this set should not disappoint. Spear and Fang’s journey for survival is entertaining. Spear is the Conan-like figure and Fang is his dinosaur companion. This set gives a good mythology for the pair.
