Learn how to operate various vintage tubes and tube sockets designed for radios. With an increased performance measurement and circuit layout, a preamplifier audio guitar bass produces spectacular sounds guaranteed to leave keep people entertained. The RCA 12AU7A and its variants (such as the 12AX7 and 12AT7) are a miniature nine-pin (B9A base) medium-gain dual triode vacuum tube. The 12AU7A is almost identical to the 12AU7 except the 12AU7A can be used in series string filament circuits due to its controlled warm-up cathode. Otherwise, there is no difference. The tubes belong to a large family of dual triode vacuum tubes, which share the same pinout (RETMA 9A). The 12AU7 is also known in Europe under its Mullard-Philips tube designation ECC82. There are many equivalent tubes with different names, some identical, some designed for ruggedness, long life, or other characteristics; examples are the US military 5814A and the European special-quality E82CC and E182CC. The 12AU7 tubes feature welded plates and two clear top sides, with vintage tubes and tube sockets providing an unassuming appeal to not only engineers but clients as well. This tube is essentially two 6C4s or two EC90s in the same envelope. Double triodes of the 12AU7 family have a center-tapped filament for use in either 6.3V 300mA or 12.6V 150mA heater circuits. While new RCA 12AU7 tubes have black plates and square getters, the original 1950s types have gray plates and top getters. The 1946 miniature 12AU7/ECC82, with similar, but not identical, electrical characteristics to the 6SN7 and ECC32 and a filament usable on either 6.3 or 12.6V supplies, is more widely used than the 6CG7/6FQ7. The 6SN7 was considered to be obsolete by the 1960s, replaced by the 12AU7, and became almost unobtainable. With the introduction of semiconductor electronics, vacuum tubes of all types ceased to be manufactured by the major producers. As of 2012, the 12AU7 tubes continued to be manufactured in Russia, Slovakia (JJ Electronic), and China. The 12AU7A tube is popular in hi-fi vacuum tube audio as a low-noise line amplifier, driver (especially for tone stacks), and phase-inverter in vacuum tube push-pull amplifier circuits. It was widely used, in special-quality versions such as E82CC and 5814A, in pre-semiconductor digital computer circuitry. Use of special quality versions outside of the purpose they were designed for may not be optimal; for example, a version for digital computers may be designed for long life without cathode poisoning when mostly switched to low-current mode in switching applications. Tested using a Mercury 1101 tester, the RCA tube showcases exceptional tube nomenclature together with power supplies for various tube circuits. Exactly as described. Excellent condition.
Quick shipment and good packaging, to start off. All of the tubes are exactly as described, date and gm-matched, with small unobtrusive stickers. All had excellent-to-very-good paint marking. All were in original 1958 USN packing boxes, including the age patina on the box, and its natural color. I love this kind of stuff, almost as much to try it out and enjoy it on my electronic gear as I do to just look at it and think of the history of it. Muddy and unimpressive
I was expecting a clean, linear performer. The sound was muddy and not clear. The tubes I tried tested out very well, and Conn are supposedly pre-selected for noise and microphonics. Tried them in my system compared to a standard RCA 12au7a. Hardly worth listening to. I was surprised by the lack of clarity and the poor high frequency performance. Instruments did not sound 'real'. I'm not a valve expert, but I can say that these 12AU7s (together with a set of 12AT7s) have shaken up my XiangSheng 728A pre-amp: toning down the previously rather heavy bass without losing impact or detail, and adding a richer mid to the sound.
