Disclosure: I bought two of these. Initially I was VERY unhappy. Then I reasearched what I had purchased and changed my mind. Overall, there are three types of data on your computer: (1) the stuff that you need immediate and absolute rapid access to - the OS and the swap space. (2) the applications, and the current project(s)). (3) the stuff that you need later. In my case, 10% of the My Documents directory are the current project. The other 90% of it and all of the offline backups (i.e. the USB external drives) are in the category of stuff you need later. These WDnnEXRX series (where nn are any digits) are NOT what you would use as the boot disk drive in a computer - i.e. the the OS and the swap space. For the OS and swap space you want a solid state disk. For the applications, and the My Documents you want a 7200 (or 10,000) RPM WD "Black" drive (or the Segate, etc. equivalent). These WD "Green" drives are what you want for "the stuff you need later". NOTE: No mattter what the ebay (and other) sellers say this drive is NOT a 7200 RPM drive. It is a VARIABLE speed drive that has a maximum speed of 7200 RPM. While it's being accessed it ramps the speed up to 7200, when it's not being accessed it saves some DC power and ramps the speed down to 5400 for a while, and after a period it actually spins the drive down to a dead stop for maximum power savings. This behavior is controlled by a complex algorithm that you CAN'T override. The WD literature says that the "Green hard drives reduce power consumption by up to 40% and offer best-in-class acoustics and operating temperature". Read that as saying that the algorithm controls the drive power, speed and performance to maximize the "greenness". Translation: It's a low power drive that will have real sluggish response when it's in the max power saving mode. The WD literature also says that the "IntelliPower" algorithm implements "A fine-tuned balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both significant power savings and solid performance". Note that is doesn't mention anything about optimizing the transfer rate. Yes, it does 6 gigabits per second - but only for what is in the 64 MB buffer. Once it has to go outside the buffer it has to spin the drive up (if it's halted), or wait for the platters to come around. Translation: It's a low power, sluggish drive. The WD literature also mentions "IntelliSeek - Calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise, and vibration." Well, "seeking" in a drive involves moving the disk heads. Drives designed for any level of performance move the heads as fast as possible - if you could see through the walls of the disk drive the head carrier would look like it had a incredibly bad case of the muscle twitches. These movements obviously use power and any moving any mass results in vibration. Noise is a given in any device that has moving parts - be it car, a drive spindle or a head carrier. If the "IntelliSeek" algorithm modulates the seek speed to lower the "power consumption, noise and vibration" it's an admission of low performance - another reason to NOT use this drive as a primary drive. Translation: It's a low power, sluggish drive. On the other tentacle, all of the above are GOOD reasons to use these drives in any non-RAID external storage drive housings (USB, etc). They would also be ideal in a solar powered data collection system or any type of battery powered system.Read full review
I bought this drive because I was in need of a new 2TB hard drive (at Christmas Time. I always like this type of drive for desktops and home media servers to store my files on. The quality is very good for a desktop drive. Watch out that you don't pay more on a used drive for the price of a new one. Overall a very good value for the dollars. One thing though I would suggest that all used drives have listed on them the powered on days and hours count so that you know what the real life span is on the drive.

I bought two of them because they are "Green". Since I have four internal HD in my Mac Pros, I use one 2TB for an internal Time Machine. I am happy enough with both. I have many WD HDs and they work, except for one WD Black (the fastest one they say) which never worked (yes I tried it in different ways).
