This franchise helped pave the way for action stealth games. Playing it now both gives me nostalgia but also makes me appreciate how far videogames have come in two decades. For me, Syphon filters mechanics can be wonky in terms of navigation but it still had a good targeting system for combat. Also, the AI for enemies primative by today's standards. Yet, running and gunning your way through levels at times reminds of action movies from the 80s and 90s. The sound design and graphics hold up ok, although it's obviously dated. Apart from this, the games are great fun for a throw back experience.

I was super excited to get this, I practically ran from mailbox to family room and pulled out my good ol’ PlayStation 2(upgrades make the world go round) pressed open on my machine and put this bad boy in. For a good long minute it did nothing, no music, no sound, no dice! I think then I took it out to see, how I could help. No change in the disc(obviously) no change in my PlayStation, everything was in tiptop shape. Put it back in, no changes made, runs like a top now.

I remember some people were making fun of this game for being a Metal Gear clone. This game isn't like Metal Gear at all. Metal Gear is all about stealth and avoiding being seen by the enemy. This game is about leaping feet first into the action... zapping enemies with a taser until they burst into flames(I swear this is true), and you laugh because it's funny. This game also is unique in that environmental hazards and not fulfilling certain objectives within a certain amount of time will kill you instantly. This adds more challenge, because there are checkpoints but more than likely you will have to play some stages over and over in order to get through them. This game is a lot of fun, and is one of the games that should not be forgotten and confined to the annuls of history as a "Metal Gear clone"... because it's definitely not.Read full review
The first few times I had the game freeze as in the old days, but it was worth trying some more! I love this game thanks for the opportunity.

When Metal Gear Solid came out, a plethora of knock off's soon followed. Syphon Filter was one of these attempts at a pseudo-stealth variant. Graphics are ok, nothing stellar but at it's time was certainly a great acceptable title. As for sound, music is right on and mixed very well. There's plenty of heart in this game but some things just fall short. Sometimes the gameplay is either just way too easy or way too difficult which many games fall into that. As a gamer you wanted something that challenges you as well as rewards you. With whatever dismay that is there aside, the game easily stands on it's own merits. 989 Studios did a good job making an action thriller game.
I am so happy with what I got for this was my childhood game and I miss playing I’m playing it rn as I am typing this out

Metal Gear Solid and Syphon Filter. These games came out about the same time. I have both. Syphon filter was thought of as less, but trust me, its still a heck of a game. This game came out many moons ago. If you own a playstation, it should be yours. This game has many things going for it. It truly brings me back to that nostalgic place in the late 90's when the playstation rocked. Story: 10 of 10 I think the story is pretty decent. The story picks even before you start the game. It involved agent Gabe Logan discovering this virus that is killing people off. It is the Syphon Filter virus. It is your job to stop these viral outbreaks that terrorists are unleashing. The main terrorist is Eric Rhomer. He's the dude to go after. Once this game starts, you feel compelled to stop this guy. He's even got a snooty french accent that makes you just want to punch him in the face. You'll go after him, and eliminate any of his associates that try to stop you. Graphics: 7 of 10 The in-game graphics are good for the original playstation. Glass shatters when its shot. There's sparks coming from cut wires and power grids. It's the movie part of the game that bring down the graphics. However, the movie is fluid. The characters look like there slouching backwards all the time. It's not a big deal though. The story over powers this little grahpical problem. The graphics still are good though, you might not even notice their posture problem. Sound: 10 of 10 Good music, good gun sounds, good voice acting, good sound Every gun has a different sound. The noise that Gabe makes when being shot is funny, but it works for me. I like it. The taser gives you the sound of electricity. The different gunshot sounds are great though. You can kinda figure out what gun your enemy is shooting at you, simply by the way it sounds. Luckily, you just take that gun when their dead. Besides the awesome gunshots, you have great voice acting. Each character's voice sounds great. Gabes voice gives you that rugged hero character. Markinson, your boss, his voice gives you the idea that hes a no nonsense kind of guy. He wants you to get your mission done and move on. When a characters voice can do that, you know the game is in good shape. Gameplay: 10 of 10 The gameplay is done well. The levels are large. There are different objectives to complete. Each new level gives you a new area. Theres a nice change of scenery each time you complete the group of missions. The game runs smoothly and the framerate works for me. Some missions you might need to replay, because some are just tough. However, you feel compelled to try again. That is the result of the good story. The game starts off easy. It lets you get acquainted with the game. However, by the end of the game the difficulty will pick up. By then though, you'll be ready for this and it won't bother you. Replay: 7 of 10 I like replaying this game. The story keeps me coming back. You might not want to, I think most people would though. I just recently popped this in my ps2 and played through it. Made me realize yet again how great this game is. Prompted me to write this review. However, there arent any unlockables or anything though, if you like those things. Probably takes about 10-15 hours to complete. That's your basic action game's length, I think. Overall: 10 of 10 I bought this game full price when it came out back in the day. Now it's under $5. If you're an avid playstation 1 gamer, pick this game up. You won't regret iRead full review
