Well, gentlemen,I am ashamed to confess that in my particular case makeshift solutions did not work. First I used my old 6" needle nose pliers.Narrowed the lips with the flat file, made a groove with a round file inside the lips-NO GO !!! Master link kept slipping out and I could not sqeeze it no matter how hard I tried. Then I ordered those Master Link Pliers Bike Chain Tool, the rest was easy...

These chain pliers are comfortable, attractive, easy to use and are made well enough to last the home mechanic a lifetime. These pliers can be used to both "close" or "open" the chain links. Some pliers only do one function (usually to close the links), these do both. With some bicycle tools i.e. a Derailleur Hanger Alignment Tool the price you pay makes a difference in how the tool performs. In this case I don't think it makes any difference whatsoever. For me the Bike Hand has worked as well as anything else I've ever used. The only concern might be how well they would hold up in professional environment. Other than than there is no reason for me not to recommend them.

Great for the home. Works perfect. Yes you can remove the chain without this tool and I have for many years but this makes it so much faster and easier. Also locks the link quickly when installing the chain.
