I have used this decoder in a number of Kato N-scale locos, most notably the EF-15, DD13, and EF57. In each case the decoder is a simple lightboard swap with no additional modifications to the model's frame or body shell. It is important to note that the decoder is somewhat thinner than the original factory board where the contact pads are, and as a result it makes poor electrical contact beneath the pickup-end of the decoder. The instructions address this, and advise to use a layer of Kapton tape on the frame to build-up the area. I have found two layers to be necessary, but that probably varies from model-to-model. Additionally, the Digitrax decoder uses dimmer slightly-blue-colored LEDs compared to Kato's brighter sunny-white LEDs. Other than those minor issues, the decoder is fantastic- DC-compatibility, nice hum-free operation, BEMF (though you have to set it up for your particular loco- it's not automatic like TCS's,) and great slow-speed operation. It also has the full selection of lighting effects as the larger decoders, and six lighting outputs (headlamp, tail lamp, and four solder pads for optional lights.) All-in-all, a great decoder for a very reasonable price.Read full review
