  • End - measuring rods are for recalibrating micrometers. There is little to choose between major makes.

There is not much to say about end-measuring rods -- they serve to recalibrate micrometers to "zero". The Starrett rods are accurate for that purpose, their ends slightly spherical so they are easy to align between the jaws of the micrometer. Indeed, the Starrett end-measuring rods have set the standard of the industry for generations and still do. The ones with rubber handles insulate the rod from body heat so that it expands less in use. However, if your micrometers are in older wooden cases the rods with rubber handles are too large diameter to fit in the slots in the case. Unfortunately for someone needing the older "naked" rods, they are only rarely available on e-bay. This being said, I have absolutely no reason to be negative about measuring rods made by Brown &Sharpe, Lufkin or Mitutoyo -- they are all equally accurate for the purpose of zeroing micrometers, which is what they are intended for.
