This is yet another in a long line of superb steam locomotives from Kato. The detailing is superb and, as you would expect from Kato, it runs effortlessly straight out of the box. The design of the coupled wheels allows it to traverse the smallest radius curves on my layout (15 inch) with no problems whatsoever. The color looks right, not too shiny, and it had directional lighting that illuminates with only a minimum about of power. I like this because it means the lights are on even at slow speed. I do have two small complaints. Firstly, it seems to be a mm or so wider than most other locomotives which required me to slew my track away from one of the platform edges. Secondly, both smoke deflectors had come away in transit and it took me a while to figure out how to reattach them. Even now, the slightest finger pressure in the wrong place causes them to come off. Overall though, another winner from Kato MichaelRead full review

This locomotive is beautifully made. It rolls nicely even at low speeds and it's fun to watch with so many moving parts and details. There are some very small pieces and fine details so it needs to be handled very carefully. This locomotive is meant to be partnered with Kato's Union Pacific Water Tenders and 7 piece Excursion Car Set (both sold separately). This locomotive is long and requires a minimum 11" radius curve on flat track, and 15" radius on viaduct track. If you add the water tenders and 7pc car set, your train will be more than 8 feet long, so it's really best for a large, permanent layout. Recommended for serious hobbyists

Lots of detail packed into an N scale locomotive. Lok sound with speaker in tender produces big sound in a tiny package . Only couple downsides are, it can be a bit tricky to get all wheels on the track, and although Kato claims 11" radius turns, this locomotive jumps off on Kato's 12" and 13" radius unitrack. 15" unitrack seems tight but works.

This is a fine example of Kato's quality and detail work. The engine runs great using DC and, I'm sure, will run even better once I convert it to DCC. If you are looking for a 4-8-4, look no further.

I got both the 838 and 844. This 844 runs ok on completely flat ground level tracks but if you have any imperfections in your track work like sudden 1mm-3mm elevation changes either the tender or front/rear 4 wheel sets will derail. It also doesn’t like my Kato truss bridges and tender keeps derailing on those while pulling the UP Excursion set or anything.

Junk. Normally, Kato is the best there is but this was a waste of money. The pickup is so bad, it wont continue running under 1/3 throttle. Other engines run perfectly on the same track. Clean the wheels, no change. And while we're on the subject of wheels, the drivers wobble to the point that the cab dips around 1/16" which is huge. Unacceptable.

Very interesting locomotive, with good detail and superior performance in the usual Style of KATO.

Make no mistake, these are not toys, and are very delicate. However, the detail and realism are top notch. Kato makes a beautiful product, and this steam locomotive is gorgeous.
