  • Allows transfer of eight circuits to your generator

Rather than run twenty or more extension cords of various lengths from my 120 V generator - as I did during the last 4-day outage - I chose to install this transfer panel to allow 120V generator power to every room in my house and all the key facilities I wanted powered: furnace/ACs, refrigerator, internet, router, phones, TV, computers, bathroom vent fan, lights, etc. To transfer the maximum number of eight circuits, I used QO-T1515 and QOT2020 tandem breakers, which were hard to find at the local big box. There may be alternates, but I've used those extensively in other subpanels, so I ordered them on line. The ideal place to locate the transfer panel was above the main panel, so that existing circuits could easily reach the new panel. Ordinarily the transferred circuits are split between the two halves of the 240V breaker. They can continue to be served that way if you use a 240V generator. For my 120V generator I simply wired both terminals of the generator transfer breaker to the hot lead from the generator and all eight circuits are then served in parallel during the transfer. The interlock prevents that from being a short circuit situation for the main panel as well as preventing any backfeed to the utility. In my situation I used 4-20A circuits and 4-15A circuits so that each side of the 60A main panel breaker normally serves just 70A of circuit breakers. Load diversity prevents that from being any limitation. During generator transfer the transfer panel 60A breaker just acts as a switch, since the 3000W generator I use has a 30A circuit breaker and a 25A continuous rating which will limit the 140A of circuitry connected. So I severely ration what can be in service at any one time. But I no longer have to trip over extension cords or deal with excessive load on an extension cord, since all circuits are now appropriately protected. The only problem I encountered was that the screws on the wiring lugs of the 60A breakers provided were too tight to loosen, until I discovered they used square drive screws; flat and phillips screw drivers were useless.

  • aux gen panel

my application for this panel is to supply a subpanel with power from either the grid or from a generator; the mechanical interlock btwn the two main-CB’s (which backfeed onto the buss bars) only allows one or the other main-CB to be actuated. note: the subpanel being supplied will be connected directly to this panel’s busses. If my method of operation does not make sense to someone, I recommend contacting an electrician who can safely do the installation / thks (this panel will do the job well and the price is good; SQ D quality excellent as usual)

  • Perfect for small generators

Easy to install, flush mount, and allows for enough circuits to utilize the maximum output of smaller generators without having to purchase an expensive gen panel.
