This movie is produced by Mel Brooks, and is loosely based on his experiences as a young writer on "Your Show of Shows" with Sid Caesar in the 1950s. Errol Flynn was a guest-star one week. Brooks was assigned to baby-sit him. The movie is both From Nat King Cole's "Stardust" and '54 Buicks w/ "white-wall" tires to finding-out that "some of the finest erections in Europe" are also "plastered" and that "ladies throw-up...gentlemen vomit." The late Peter O'toole (Alan Swann) is the perfect fading/drunken swash-buckling movie idol with a heart. He'll steal a policeman's horse in Central Park, but is terrified to perform on "live" TV, or see his 12-year-old daughter - "Tess," Benji Stone (Mark Linn Baker) a young writer on King Kaiser's Comedy Cavalcade TV show, reminds him of the courage inside, that allows him to to perform those movie heroes so convincingly! Swann then rescues King Kaiser from real thugs on stage, as only a swash-buckler could! The funniest scene is when Swann accompanies Benji to Brooklyn, to have dinner with his Jewish family, including a his mother's 2nd husband, a former filipino boxer who cooks with parrot, and aunt Sadie who greets him wearing her old wedding dress. Finally the entire building empties to see them off. This would be a great double-feature with Woody Allen's (also a young writer on "Your Show of Shows") 1987 movie "Radio Days." It's quite simply a movie of great fun. Lots of sight gags and laugh out loud moments that does have a heart-warming side too (and a few good life lesson statements). Great all around film with a wonderful cast headed up with Peter O'Toole

A true feel-good movie. I would watch Peter O'Toole stand and read a phone book, but he is particularly enchanting in this movie.

Peter O'Toole was great in this movie. It takes you back to the early fifties and live television. I liked it a lot.
