As someone familiar with Sherlock Holmes I was curious about this iteration of him. However, I wasn't too interested before because I didn't know who Benedict Cumberbatch was. Fast forward to today, knowing that Cumberbatch is Dr. Strange and Khan and now I was definitely interested! For the two days immediately after it arrived I watched the series and thoroughly enjoyed it! I certainly (and highly) recommend it to anyone who wants to see a modern take on the Sherlock Holmes story and also for anyone who is a fan of Cumberbatch. He absolutely owns the role of modern Sherlock!

I purchased this set after discovering that the show was “no longer available” through PBS. I knew the price for this set was unreasonably low, but I thought that perhaps this show was old enough that the price could be feasible. The set I received (a week and a half later, I might add) is a bit suspicious. The quality of the box and disc images and of the DVD’s themselves aren't quite of the pirated variety, but it definitely is a low-cost edition. The DVD cases in the box don't match each other. The images are fuzzy and clearly produced via rasterized images versus the more sharp vector sort. The DVD cases are a big part of the main problem I have with my purchase; the discs arrived damaged, and two are largely unplayable. The cases have a raised bump underneath the disc retentions that scratch the undersides if the discs shift at all. One disc was actually floating around its case and wasn’t secured when it arrived. Needless to say that disc is more scratch than video. I am disappointed in the quality and would not purchase this set again.Read full review

Not only is/are the production(s) superior, the cast could not be better; I can't imagine anyone portraying any of the characters with more verve, vitality and ability. I love Dr. Watson, especially, and believe he is truly a breakaway star of the series. Mr. Cumberbatch is a tad too flamboyant to suit me, however his portrayal is top notch and in keeping with the writer's vision. Each character has an unmatched or unexpected personality; everything is outstanding, including the original music - just takes my breath away; the costumes are timely as necessary as are the sets. The overall production is absolutely brilliant and well worth the money to be able to enjoy the program over and over! I had to have them!

Until this series, I was convinced that only Basil Rathbone could play the renowned sleuth. Not to mention, how could it be transplanted to the 21st century without ruining it? But this new take, with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock and Martin Freeman as his Watson, if anything, improves on the original. It does this by going deeper into the characters than was the case in the old movies, including a wonderful Mrs. Hudson (the detectives' landlord/housekeeper), played by Una Stubs. Add to this an updated Moriarity and a Mrs. Watson that is totally unexpected, and this series is by far superior, for instance, to the attempted updating given in a pair of movies by Guy Ritchie. (In those films, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, as Holmes and Watson respectively, take what was always first and foremost about a great mind and turn it into something all about the action -- which rather missed the point.) One of the greatest re-boots of Sherlock Holmes in history, this series combines the tradition and unique Holmes-Watson relationship of the 19th century and puts it into the 21st, with re-imagined cases and situations.
