Great tapes...I have used them forever. I just wish that they were still manufactured. They are still fairly easy to find, but even new in the package, there is no way to know how old/new they are. But they have gotten really expensive. I still use some analog 4-track recorders...I realize that I am a rare case, but I have also heard that analog audio cassettes have been making a comeback with some younger people. These Maxell High Bias tapes were always one of the best.

The Maxell XL II is a chrome bias tape. There are others in their line, but this is always there and a consistent in it’s performance. It is not a question, it is a fact. Maxell and TDK are always consistent high performance brands. There are others, but these two are always good and always yield high grade results. There are some that were produced near the end that had quality issues. The key thing to do is keep your heads and tape path clean and demagnetized if you want high performance results.

Maxell cassette tapes are built to last. This type was built in the mid-80's and they are excellent quality tapes. I have been using Maxell cassette tapes for decades and they just work great and sound wonderful. The Maxell XLII-S are my favorite tapes. How many things are over 30 years old that still work like new?

Excellent sound reproduction! Crisp highs, little hiss/no hiss with Dolby. Difficult to distinguish between the Maxell tape and a CD. Not quite the fidelity of a metal cassette, but nearly so, and much, much cheaper! I would strongly recommend the type II for classical and high-decibel rock. The Maxell type I is also of good quality, and perfectly suited to phonograph recordings.

I love the savings of buying high quality recording tape via ebay however just because it is new and sealed doesn't mean you can't have problems, the tapes could have been exposed to a strong magnetic field , this results in audio drop offs when you record with them. I check 1or 2 of a purchased lot of tapes by sample recording with them. Jay Clare
