Although modern audiences may be reluctant to give this old black-and-white movie a chance, I suspect if it were in color, it would rival GONE WITH THE WIND. It has elaborate Civil War-era ballgowns and mansions, strong performances by the lead characters, and a compelling storyline. Like Scarlett O'Hara, the motives of Delia (Miriam Hopkins) and Charlotte (Bette Davis) aren't always pure. Both love the same man; both love the same child; and deep down, they love each other. But both are willing to lie, and hurt suitors as well as each other, in order to gain the appearance of social respectability. Bette Davis is incredible both as the impetuous 20-year-old Charlotte, and later, as the aging Charlotte. She convincingly plays both ages in the days before advanced make-up techniques. A must see!Read full review
