The Dee Zee brand Tailgate Assist is a very well-made product. It installs easily but you do need a torque wrench which a lot of folks don't have. It functions well although but I wish it dropped the tailgate a little slower. I'm thinking about getting another one for the passenger side and that would make it perfect. All in all, good product and I am satisfied.

I installed it on my 2010 F250. Looks it’s made with good materials, but sadly it only helps on the last 5 or 6 inches. If you open the tailgate, you will need to hold it anyway most of the way. It really helps only to stop the hard hit at the end. But if you have both hands carrying something , and you release the tailgate, it will go down fast and it will probably bend the base of the ball support at the bottom. I’m disappointed, since I thought it would really make a difference from the top, at least half way, but it doesn’t . As you can see on second photo, that is were start making resistance, almost at the end.

I installed 2 shocks based on other reviewers recommendations. My tailgate (2000 F350 Super Duty) is heavy. One shock (Driver’s side) helps the quick drop when opening the gate from slamming the support cables. 2 shocks slows it even better and is much nicer (personal preference). especially since my tailgate has some body filler. One thing though, When installing on the passenger side the lower hole needs to be drilled out to 1/2”. Also a hose clamp needs to be wrapped around the hinge as for some reason the shock pulls the tailgate pin out of the hinge. In all I really like the smoothness with 2 although are pricey. Time will tell if the performance lasts.

I just installed this product and so far after a week, I am happy. It does slow down the rate of the tailgate's descent which is want I wanted. Having watched several on-line videos before I bought it, it appears there are varying levels of resistance in this product. I don't know if this is due to production variations or what. I do wish mine had a little more resistance than it does. However, it does do the job. I just hope it doesn't lose pressure over time. If you read the installation instructions carefully, and follow them as presented, you shouldn't have any installation issues. I didn't. Additionally, the product looks well built and solid. I wish they would have included how to disengage the product for those times when I have to remove the tailgate. I'm sure I'll figure it out.Read full review

Reviews on the longevity of the unit are mixed but I really needed something to slow down the very heavy tailgate with step on my 2016 F350. These may be some of the heaviest tailgates in the industry and the potential for injury if this thing gets away from you is great, especially if you have youngsters around. I am surprised that manufacturer has not mitigated this issue. With the Dee Zee unit I also note that in the event of future issues you can purchase installation hardware and replacement struts as separate items if needed rather than purchasing the whole unit again. I consider that a plus. For me the install was quick and straightforward. Each model install kit and instruction sheet is specifically engineered for an individual truck. The instructions for my Ford conveniently include full and correct tools and sizes (all metric) needed for the job. I watched a couple videos to get a feel for the install and following the instructions had no issues at all. I used one of the “blind nut tool” tips in the instructions and applied a bit of the included blue thread lock in the kit to the end of the install tool screw as you set it up for the install. I believe it took me less than 30 minutes from opening the kit to testing the function even with taking my time. I think the hardest part (after getting into the package) was getting the tail light housing out of the truck! This is my third Super Duty and the locator pins in the tail lights are a pain. I never have but always think I’m going to break something. The piston looks small but works great. Only time will tell how long it holds up but initially what a difference. Everyone that I have shown it to wants one. The instruction sheet is available to review for specific models on the Dee Zee site. Some of the installs look a lot simpler than the one for this Ford. You do need to be a bit handy, and at least for this truck, have access to a few tools. Product arrived quickly. Directions easy to understand. Researched a lot of reviews, and modified my installation. Instead of using the "oval" shaped hole they say to use, drilled a hole, up and to the right of the original hole. Reviews showed that the "nutsert" could become loose. By drilling a hole, now the nutsert has a perfectly round hole, to "bite" against. Just placed 1 of the washers in that area, and marked spot for new hole, then followed directions. Nice to be able to just let tailgate go, and it doesn't slam down. Nice and slow. Truck is an F250 and tailgate has the hidden step and it works perfectly. You do not have to modify installation. Product is worth the money.

When opening the tailgate, starts fast then slowest half way down. Could still hurt somebody not aware. Does the job and prevents slamming the tailgate down and possibly damaging the backup camera. Hope it last.

I can see how this product would work for light duty trucks with lighter tailgates, but the "benefit" is barely even noticeable for the heavy duty tailgates. It's slightly better than nothing but if you drop the tailgate, it will still slam open barely being slowed down at all. If you're putting this product on a heavy duty truck, don't expect much.

Easy installation, this is my 2nd one for a newer truck. Only thing I dont like is the Allen key they give you. It useless, you would either strip the bolt using it,or yiu cant get enough leverage. A impact sock would be much better

I installed this on my 2014 f250 King Ranch. It does not do anything for assistance with raising the tail gate, but all I have to do is lift the handle and let it go and it will slowly lower itself down. It actually does this at pretty much the perfect speed, it's not so fast that it smashes down, but it's also not so slow that you are waiting for it. I will have one of these on every truck I own for now on
