Typical mass-produced petcock of reasonable quality. The steel wings used to open and close the petcock are pressed onto the brass shaft threads, and from reading the reviews the wings can frequently lose their grip. The inside of the hole in the wings has some teeth that are supposed to grip the threaded shaft. Problem with that is the wings are steel and with any possibility or force will chew into the softer threaded brass shaft, then the wings will just spin and the petcock will no longer open or close. In older and higher quality petcocks the threaded shaft would have opposing flat surfaces, and the hole in the turning wings would have extra material to provide snug, mating surfaces. I ended up cleaning, fluxing and soldering the wings and thimble to the threaded brass shaft. This fills in between the teeth on the inside of the hole in the wings, and between the thimble and wings. This provides a much larger surface area to distribute the load. Solder the back of the wings where they contact the threaded shaft first, and don't get too much solder on the exposed threads or the petcock won't open fully. It's annoying to have to modify/fix something straight out of the box, but it's a quick job. It's also far better than having to deal with wings spinning on the shaft and trying to replace a failed petcock with a full radiator.Read full review
