While the product is called a "Paper" kit, it is actually made of very accurate laser-cut, colored, cardstock. It is one of some 20 kits of scenes from "Kiki's Delivery Service" anime move. Each little diorama is a nearly exact reproduction of an actual scene from the movie, adapted to the 3-D models and using forced perspective. Only simple tools are needed for construction: X-acto knife, white or "Tacky" glue, toothpicks to apply glue (very sparingly), and optional paint or colored pencils/pens. The instructions are in Japanese, with many drawings showing the assembly process. It is not required to read the text to build the kit. However, I found it useful to download a Japanese to English color chart from Google to decipher the kanji characters that tell what added colors needed to go where. To improve the appearance of the figures, I colored the unfinished edges of the layers to match adjacent layers. Using colored pencils or paint, I also wrapped color around any unfinished sides to help the 3-D effect. (Such as the orange stripes on Tombo's shirt.) The most difficult part of the kit was painting Jiji the cat's eyes. I used a sharp needle, dipped in a tiny amount of thin white paint to act as a micro-brush. Experiment on a scrap piece of cardstock to get the technique. Magnification may be needed. All in all, I found this kit to be fun and challenging for someone who had never built a paper kit before. Note: The finished kit is very delicate and box it comes in is also used for display and storage. It is just the thing for someone who enjoys Ghibli Studio movies and especially Kiki.Read full review
