A charming product of the gaslit mystery era that produced Sherlock Holmes, this literate collection of linked short stories (well, at least the first three are linked) was included on Ellery Queen's list of most important short story collections, "Queen's Quorum." The author was American but captures the foggy London setting and upper-class British characters with the keen eye of a journalist and the narrative sense of a natural storyteller, not unlike Conan Doyle, although these tales differ significantly from those about Holmes. A delightful if brief reading experience with a twist or two.
