In 2010, Dawn Brancheau, a veteran trainer at the well-known Orlando, FL, water park Sea World, lost her life when she was attacked by Tilikum, a bull orca (or "killer whale") weighing 10,000 pounds who was a regular attraction at the park. What made the incident all the more disturbing was this was not the first time Tilikum had turned on one of his trainers, and that the orca had also caused the death of a trainer in 1991 before he was purchased by Sea World. While orcas will sometimes attack humans in captivity, such incidents are extremely rare in the wild, leading some scientists to question the wisdom of keeping large, intelligent, and sometimes territorial creatures in captivity and expecting them to perform on a regular basis. Filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite began researching the lives of orcas in captivity after the death of Dawn Brancheau, and in the documentary BLACKFISH, she offers a powerful and provocative look at a remarkable breed of animals that humans still don't fully understand, and how the financial interests of water parks and resorts may run counter to the best interests of the animals they put on display. Taking its title from a Native American name for orcas, BLACKFISH received its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Oh The Sorrow
Magnificent intelligent mammals who live in loving family groups....well this is the story of Human Greed and Abuse perpertrated by "Sea World"...these "Blackfish" Orcas are hunted... the children are kidnapped and "trained" in Sea worlds many facilities....These great creatures are imprisoned in a really tiny pool....compared to the vast freedom that they enjoyed in the open ocean....it is like they are in solitary confinment...they become angry...lose their lust for life...and kill a few trainers....Shame on "Sea World"....and all other institutions which seek to make a dollar off of the pain and dispair of any living creature...I am ashamed of our "human...humane" species.!!! This is a must see for all who care about life rather then profit.

TRUE EYE OPENER ABOUT HOW PERFORMING ANIMALS ARE TREATED BEHIND THE PUBLIC VIEW. I'M GLAD SEA WORLD WILL PHASE OUT ORCA'S IN CAPITIVITY ONCE THEIR CURREND PODS DIE OFF. I JUST WISH THERE WAS A SANCTUARY FOR THEM TO LIVE WHERE THEY HAD ROOM TO SWIM AND NOT ENTERTAIN. SEAWORLD DOES A GOOD JOB RESCUING ANIMALS AND RELEASING THEM TO THE WILD. awesome documentary!!!!!! keeps you glued to your seat til it's over. compelling enough to get seaworld in florida and california to be closed due to the treatment of the orca's. really amazing documentary. i put it right up there with ken burns' documentary of the civil war. i would definitely recommend this show to everyone
