NotesMany prog bands eventually moved toward pop and scored big hits along the way-but none filled the arenas and climbed the charts with more spectacular success than Styx did with their Top 10 A&M LPs "The Grand Illusion," "Pieces of Eight," "Cornerstone," "Paradise Theater" and "Kilroy Was Here." Those 1977-83 LPs contain their hits "Come Sail Away," "Fooling Yourself (the Angry Young Man)," "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)," "Renegade," "Babe," "Why Me," "The Best of Times," "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Mr. Roboto," "Don't Let It End" and more! • Cut-Rate Product. Lots of Good Tracks Betrayed by Poor Production

OK, the music is there, for better (Paradise Theatre) or worse (Kilroy Was Here). All well and good. You either like it or you don't. My issue is with the quality of this compilation, which comes nicely packaged in a cardboard case in which the discs are stored in paper sleeves bearing the original LP artwork. There are absolutely NO liner notes, which would have been a nice way to tie all the albums together. You can find reviews online, but including a historical perspective on the band and the concepts underlying the individual albums would have been a welcome addition. This 'bare bones' approach extends to the discs themselves, which are devoid of any unique artwork (why not have used the album art on each? guess they didn't want to waste the ink). I could live with that because it's all about the music, right? Well, therein lies another big let-down, as these are in no way 're-masters'. While the tracks are 'clean' in that there's no tape hiss or other sonic anomalies, the sound lacks any depth or texture. The music is so tinny that the wonderful soaring upper-range harmonies that fans of the band adore sound like they were over-dubbed by Alvin and the Chipmunks. You KNOW there's bass and drums playing somewhere, but that's only because you've heard the tracks elsewhere. This is nothing short of blasphemy. A grand opportunity lost to deliver a great-sounding compilation of some of the band's best work that falls flat on wanting ears due to either laziness, budget or both. Yeah, the package represents a 'good' value in that you get the music promised at a nice price, but it's so lacking in other areas it makes one wonder what the heck A&M was thinking, if they were at all. Sometimes you do get what you pay for. My system: Fully re-capped & restored 1977 Marantz 2285, Rotel RC-1055 changer, Sennheiser wireless RS-160 headphones. Simple but sweet :)

  • "Styx Five Musical Jewels"

A Perfect Collection For Every Styx Band Fan. Not any Greatest Hits Collecttion has ever included the song "Why Me" from The "Cornerstone" Album, "Why Me" appeared in the charts after Styx number one "Babe" and it reached #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in February 1980,But as I noticed (probably there is one ,I'm not sure) it's not in any of their Greatest Hits issues.5 greatest albums,Styx.at their peak. Highly recommended..

  • Set of 5 classic Styx albums delivers the goods

This covers pretty much all of the major Styx albums that I personally listened to growing up, and it's a great overall value. Nice mini LP cover reproductions. Lots of bang for the buck.
