This GSX-190II is a great little printer, essentially a clone of the old Epson MX-80 F/T, RX-80 and FX-80 series.
It comes with x86 (32 bit) and 64 bit drivers and will work with any brand of Windows from Windows 98 to at least Windows 10. Caution, however, the drivers are not signed, so for Windows Vista and up you need to disable the signed driver requirement in order to install them. Google "disable driver signature for Windows" to get the work around.
The Epson 8750 cloth ribbon looks to be the replacement equivalent for this printer. This is also the ribbon that the MX-RX-FX series used. I don't believe the Citizen GSX-190 ribbon is a fit. The JMR108 ribbon, the direct replacement, might be hard to come by except for Alibaba or eBay through Asia. Google it.
Printer works with three different interfaces: standard USB A-B cable, CN36 (36-pin Centronix parallel port), and 25 pin serial.
I'm using mine with Windows 10 and the UGREEN USB to Parallel Port USB to IEEE1284 CN36 Centronics Printer Cable Adapter, available on Amazon. Install will be to LPT1. I will also be using it on my old DOS system and for my even older Apple IIe (DOS has been verified to work too = no driver necessary there).
If installing driver for USB A-B cable, please note that Windows plug & play will auto-install a generic driver when you attach the cable. Delete this printer and go with the one you are installing via the Setup.exe. For the USB A-B install, be sure the printer hardware shows on USB Virtual port USB001 or USB002, not LPT1.
Printer has tractor feed or cut sheet feed. Printer will do graphics, but by dot matrix of course. Text quality is not perfect but is okay, just recognize this is a dot matrix printer, and for $100.
I've found it a good deal for my hobbyist needs.
I purchased this dot matrix printer to work with an old retro 1802 ELF computer I built over 40 years ago. It is set up for ASCII print through a simple parallel port and works well. The Serial, Parallel & USB ports are a plus and they all work, even on old windows computers with USB, COM & LPT ports! The serial port defaults to 9600 baud 8bits 1 stop bit & no parity and can be changed through the setup menu. Make sure to download the complete manual for this printer. It's a bit confusing on how to change all the default parameters.
One thing I had to do was set the left margin guide to a different spot than the default arrow to match alignment with documents printed on other printers. The tractor feed seems to work well. I've had a few paper jams with single cut sheet paper that sometimes hangs up through the plastic tear mechanism. Removing this piece with single sheet paper eliminates this issue.
The included OEM ribbon cartridge was a bit dried out. I purchased the LD Ribbon Cartridge S015631 through Amazon and they were an exact fit. This is an Epson compatible cartridge and is very inexpensive. The print quality is now really good.
I will probably buy another one to have as a spare. For the price, you can't go wrong!
Can I buy another printer I need two one at home one at work.. I use a old program 30 years old better than the new stuff and it is
Set for Dot Matrix print.
