This book is about making your own split bamboo fly rod, from scratch. I have other books which go through the technical aspects if this activity. They dicuss the "heart" of bamboo fly rod making. This book also deals with those aspects. In addition, since the book is composed entirely of thoughts, hints, observations and anecdotes of actual rodmakers, it provides "little insights" into the practice of this craft. It could very well be described as discussing the "heart AND soul" of bamboo rod making. There are a number of ways of approaching certain aspects of making a bamboo fly rod that I simply would not have thought of, without perusing this book. It also provided me with insights on certain tools, and ways to maintain those tools, that I would not have come up with, independently. If you are at all giving thought to building your own split bamboo fly rod, I would HEARTILY recommend purchase of this book!!!! Since (as I said, above) I have other books on this craft, I had some familiarity with the technical steps (by this, I mean "the how-to"), in many ways, this book served to reinforce and augment that knowledge. I am not really sure if this would be "textbook enough" if you had no other information. It is very possible that it would, but I am unable to accurately analyze that, because it would involve more speculation than I am comfortable utilizing. As a supplemental resource, it cannot be praised enough!!!! "The Planing Form", from which the title of the book ("Best of the Planing Form") is derived, is a newsletter composed of various articles submitted by people who are making bamboo fly rods. I think that the book is good enough that I may subscribe to the newsletter, as well. Basically, I loved this book.Read full review
