Ms. Frank, like my mother, is a daughter of Charleston and the Low Country. The images and softly spoken words of her characters, tinged with just a dab of Geechie Gullah are very familiar ones to me. And let's talk food......I got hungry just reading this book! But as far as "Plantation"'s plot and character development, not so much. Once again, we have a heroine done wrong by a bad, bad man. She runs home to the comfort of her family in South Carolina and blah blah blah. The characters could have been pulled out of any contemporary "Southern" novel: the well-maintained matriarch with designer clothes and a drinking problem (Ya-Ya anyone?), the hapless brother in rumpled seersucker with a white-trash wife and his own drinking and gambling problem(Grisham, anyone?), the black housekeeper, wise in the ways of herbal healing and of course gris-gris(stereotype, anyone?), and our lead character, who left as a young woman and is now a sophisticated New Yorker returned home to lock horns with her mother and at the same time, become her mother(Conroy en femme, anyone?). Again, the characters are stock, the plot is predictable, but where Ms. Frank shines is in describing her beloved Low Country. Having spent much of my childhood summers at Folly Beach, and Seabrook Island and at my mother's family home on King Street, I really did take that flavor from the book. The speech, the food, the smells of Low Country living all rang very true. Not a bad book for the beach, but certainly no thought-provoking literary masterpiece.Read full review
