Edgy, disturbing, first-rate crime drama --- the description on the case says it all. The only thing beautiful about this series is the New Zealand scenery. Otherwise, it's bleak. Recommended for adults only. Every character is fascinating, yet flawed. They are all unhappy, and with good reason. Terminal illness, incest, child porn, drug dealing, domestic violence, preteen pregnancy, murder, rape, police corruption, and the casual killing of animals --- all are realistically featured. Sadly, these things happen --- but in real life, many people survive horrific situations and manage to move on, or at least find moments of joy, humor, love, or hope amidst the darkness. In TOP OF THE LAKE, there are no roses among the thorns. It's hard to like any of these characters. The most you can do is feel sorry for them. You'll be hooked by the mystery elements, and invested in following the plot to its conclusion. Just don't think too hard about why you are actually enjoying such a sordid story. Read full review

This is a complex, moody mystery set in Australia. It reminds me a little of "The Killing" series. Well-acted and interesting.
