I enjoyed the first. I think the main actress is underrated at best and this sequel plays parody to that a tad. The ridiculous grin on her face at one point screams of a coming out party, but I fear the cruel nature of people in general will hold her back but I will gladly watch her act any day. The awkward innocence slowly being consumed by darkness seems to be her specialty though. First of all this is Nell's story. The first movie only succeeded because of her. Let's be honest, given the nature of small budget movies, practical effects are expensive. And it shows here too. The scheme of things is grander here with more of what you got from the final act of the first movie and the small budget shows. There's some faulty cgi , offscreen kills most of the time (including an excellent one shot from the exterior of a house) but there's no shaky cam at play so I overlooked the less than stellar effects. There are tons of small references to the first movie that are delightful, shaky and all. The scares were dished out at a constant rate, every 4 to 6 minutes. Though most were more eerie than scary. However I enjoyed them immensely. The opening was well done. The lift sequence was disturbing and awkwardly charming as if it belonged in the Poltergeist franchise. Also liked that whole Ringu sequence and the scenes that followed. I also liked the ending to this one but asking for a third The Last Exorcism would be absolutely silly. The side character's aren't too interesting, but it isn't their story. So everyone made the most of what they had. Yes some character relationships didn't go anywhere but that's life. Others came out of nowhere, I'm going to have to rewatch the beginning because I wonder if I missed the introduction to the Chris character or not. He seemed to just appear out of nowhere early on and was explained in a later scene to me how he knew Nell. All in all if you liked the direction the first movie took in the end and thought whatever happened to Nell at it's conclusion you'll enjoy this movie.Read full review
