Best version of "A Christmas Carol." George C Scott is simply outstanding as is the supporting cast. I have been watching this movie on Christmas eve for over 30 years. I misplaced my copy and found a brand new copy here on eBay. The tradition will continue this evening.

I think I have seen every version of "A Christmas Carol" as it is my favorite of all Christmas Stories. I've even watched those cheesy ones where they senselessly change the names and settings, like the horrid "An American Christmas Carol" and "A Diva's Christmas Carol" and I won't even get started on the yearly A Christmas Carol episodes, that's a rant that no one has time for. One of the best parts about this version is that it sticks extremely close to Dickens original manuscript, Small tiny, bits that as a yearly reader of the book I can say enhance the story ways that are noticeable when they are missing. Such as seeing Belle's life without Scrooge The settings are gorgeous and true to life, no set pieces that scream that they are modern rather than the time from which they are meant. The best thing about this version however is the casting. Every character is perfectly cast. You'll find no phony English accents or people who look the opposite Dickens descriptions. The one problem I had was getting past the fact that David Warner portrays Bob Cratchit. This is the same actor who did such a fine job as truly heinous Spicer Lovejoy in Titanic and in the beginning it was difficult for me to see past that. But, that is the reason I stopped to watch while channel surfing, so I can't complain. =) George C Scott was born to portray Scrooge, though he is a bit more robust that Scrooge. Most actors tend to overact Scrooge, but Scott is dead, on perfect. This is a HIGH recommend! A Christmas must, even before It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street!Read full review

Sort of a "Christmas Carol" junkie...have seen dozens of versions of the play and own every version of tape/DVD. George C Scott's is good but does deviate from original character. Scrooge was cheap, covetous and "rarely came down handsomely" as dickens described yet he is pictured wearing very nice clothes and a wealthy businessman...the ghost of Christmas present was a friendly happy character but in this version is rather sarcastic to Scrooge. The scenery and acting first rate...the interpretation of the character...as described by Dickens could have been better...overall still a must in my collection and viewed every year!!
