  • Easy installation

Installed this set in my Squier VM PJ-bass....fitted right in the cavity but the output jack in the kit could not be used since the Squier har a long sleeve jack. I needed to cut of the connectors on the cable in the kit and solder on the wire to the original jack. I used the original foam padding since there was no foam in the box with the EMG`s. Soundwize....not so hot sounding as some the reviews claims . The P is round and deep...well suited for rock, blues and reggae. The J is way hotter than the original Squier J and is well suited for Jaco-like stuff. The J and P together is crisp and the tone control gives the right amount of definition you`ll need for a passive PJ-bass

  • not bad at all

I'm not a big passive p-up user, but I was fixing up (hot-rodding), an old Standard 101 bass that probably cost $100 bucks new, and put some of these Geezer pick ups in it--cost more than the whole bass was worth but I was bored. I must say I was impressed from the minute I plugged it in. Very strong sounding and the alnico magnets are much clearer than the old pick ups. Also comes with the volume and tone pots and wireless connections ...whats not to like? Crank up the rear jazz pick up and you get a real "bright" sound to add to your midrange split coil slammer...makes it sound new..........

  • Great pickups but wish it had a blend control

I'm a gigging bassist, having worked in the pro circuit I am now a weekend warrior with cover and original bands. I've played a lot of different precision style basses and have tried about every aftermarket pickup. These are my favorite passive pickup for a Precision bass. I had these in another P bass so I knew the pickups were going to have the nice midrange sound with a tight bottom and growl once you got into them, which they did not disappoint. Turn down the tone and play lightly and the have a great vintage sound and work perfect with flats. Turn everything up and dig in with roundwound strings and they give you great rock sound that break up nicely. The jazz pickup sound great and is evenly matched, instead of weaker like most pj configurations. EMG did their homework and did a great job. I'm not really sure what the Geezer sound is, but these pickups do a great job of creating a great P bass tone. Installation is a breeze with the solder less connectors, and everything is supplied; pots, wiring, 1/4" jack, it's all there except for knobs. Most kits don't go this far. Set up like a jazz bass, controls are volume volume and master tone. This is ok and a proven setup, but in my case I was installing them in a p bass and didn't want to ruin the pickguard by drilling another hole or routing the body to accept another pot. I was going to set the blend at 50/50 and hide it under the pickguard. Unfortunately I couldn't do that. I ended up putting a concentric control knob in the tone position, running the bridge pickup on the bottom ring, and a master tone on the top knob. I play mostly with the neck (Split) pickup, but will blend the bridge pickup in every now and then. I could have gone with a three way switch, but I didn't want to drill a hole in a vintage pickguard. Still a great set of pickups that are lively and pretty hot for a passive set, but still keep a nice sound that isn't scooped like others. This is a vintage pickup that is a little overwound. Extremely quiet, I've yet to get any hum from it. These are my go to pickups for a precision bass.

  • Best Bass Pickups I've used

To be fair I've never gone boutique but I was always a Seymour Duncan fan. The solderless installation is what sold me really but I'm so happy with how these sound I can see why some people own 4 sets. They're incredibly easy to install and everything feels and looks high quality. The only issue I had is the pots are bigger then the old Squier ones so I don't have knobs that fit and my tone pot doesn't fit straight in my bass. These aren't EMGs fault though and there are solutions to these that I may or may not follow.

  • I’m loving these pickups

I play daily, I have 5 basses 2 have EMG Jazz pickups and I installed the GZR pickups in my Epiphone EBM 5 string. I practiced for a couple hours and really liked it. But when I went to band practice I could turn it up really loud and immediately I noticed how amazing the sound was, it was thick and not muddy even when playing the low b string! The tone control gives a clean rich sound w/o losing the fat low end. The guys in the band were just like that sounds amazing what did you do they thought I got a new amp or something! I told him that the something was the new EMG geezer pick ups in my base. I am so blown away by the sound I’m thinking about getting three more sets! Great job EMG!! BTW no more buying 9v batteries 🤪 Jbassman Lancaster PA !

  • Not for my style of playing

They're a well balanced set of pups but way too hot and distorted for my "old school" style of soul and funk. They might be great for the "metal head" crowd but after three gigs I replaced em with a matched set of Lindy Fralins that were twice the price but ten times better sounding...( or so our sound man says}.....:-) All said: if your're going for the "60's" Ozzy tone then by all means buy them. As for me, I'll pass on em.

  • EMG Geezer BUTLER passive pickups

I have 13 basses. I've always used Seymour Duncans. I read a review about these and thought I would try something different. 5 of my Fender Basses are PJ. I tried these in my '85 MIJ JAZZ BASS SPECIAL. I play classic metal, Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Ozzy, etc. I was very surprised at the tone. (I like deep tight lows, and clangy highs mixed by biamping) These are now my favorite pickups. I have bought 4 more sets for my other PJ setups.

  • Best PJ Set Ever.

I bought this for a project bass and I had zero issue installing it in. It has a great bark and thump from the P. The J gives a him free Jaco mwah (yes this is for a fretless). And together I can get a balanced J sound. I can go from JPJ to Chris Squier to Jeff Amentt to Geddy Lee to you name it. The EMG GZR is the perfect set of sodderless pickups I've had the pleasure with. Finally, a set of pickups that are more angry than the normal active or passive bass. If you have a bass that wants more attitude. This is the set for you.

  • Falshback to the 70's

Well, if you play bass and know the sound that Sabbath created in the 70's and want that sound? You need a good piece of swamp ash and these pick ups and you will be in "war pigs" heaven, throw in the jazz pick up blend and hop on the "Crazy Train" these are easy to install and an upgrade to almost any bass you put them on.
