Beautiful and poignant story about the immigrant experience in the U.S. in the early 1900. Marion Cotillard delivers another sensitive and outstanding performance as a young Polish woman, Ewa, who comes to America with her sister after both their parents were killed by the Germans. Her sister has tuberculosis, and is not permitted to enter the U.S., but must remain on Ellis Island until she is well or deported back to Poland. Joaquin Phoenix plays the role of an unscrupulous pimp who takes advantage of her predicament. The acting, costumes and setting come together to make an authentic period piece.
Thought the film depicted the times perfectly. Great cast ensemble. Desperate times, desperate measures. Great plot.
