Changing the timer was very easy. Turns out the original timer wasn't bad after all as this one operates exactly the same way. Oh well, I have a back up timer for future use. Best price I could find at the time in comparison to ordering directly from GE. One of the main reasons I didn't even bother trying to return it.

This timer control is an exact replacemnent for our old one, and it functions perfectly. Just like the original one, the stalk over which the timer knob fits is made of a composite plastic. These composite materials simply won't stand up to the torque applied hundreds of times over the course of several years and will eventually round off, leaving the controller knob nothing to grab onto. My best advice is to gently turn the knob each time you use it. It would be nice if this part of the controller was made of metal, but the relentless push to cut costs ensures plastic won't be going away anytime soon.

Before buying-replacing the dryer timer, look very closely at the reverse side of the knob on the dryer timer for tiny cracks in its small plastic part that fits over the dryer timer shaft. If small cracks (look closely with a magnifying glass if needed) are there, the knob will "feel" like it is turning the shaft, but it it only uselessly revolving around the dryer timer shaft. When buying a new Knob, get one that has a re-enforcing steel-metal ring over the outside of the small circular part that fits over the dryer timer shaft.
