Reviews"[A People's History of the United States is] one of the most important books I have ever read in a long life of reading...It's a wonderful, splendid book--a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future." -- Howard Fast "Professor Zinn writes with an enthusiasm rarely encountered in the leaden prose of academic history, and his text is studded with telling quotations from labor leaders, war resisters and fugitive slaves. . . . [It] should be required reading." -- Eric Foner, New York Times Book Review "Howard Zinn's work literally changed the conscience of a generation. And the series of 'people's histories' derived from this great work have provided new understanding of who we are and what we should aspire to be." -- Noam Chomsky "A brilliant and moving history of the American people." -- Library Journal "A brilliantly written story about the U.S. through the lives of those too often overlooked." -- Time magazine, [A People's History of the United States is] one of the most important books I have ever read in a long life of reading...It's a wonderful, splendid book--a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future.

SynopsisTHE CLASSIC NATIONAL BESTSELLER "A wonderful, splendid book--a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future." -Howard Fast Historian Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States chronicles American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official narrative taught in schools--with its emphasis on great men in high places--to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, it is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of--and in the words of--America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles--the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality--were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance. Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. This edition also includes an introduction by Anthony Arnove, who wrote, directed, and produced The People Speak with Zinn and who coauthored, with Zinn, Voices of a People's History of the United States., THE CLASSIC NATIONAL BESTSELLER "A wonderful, splendid book--a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future." -Howard Fast Historian Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States chronicles American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official narrative taught in schools--with its emphasis on great men in high places--to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. • Not the Texas Schools Book Standard for History texts.

If you're a rah, rah 'Murica!! type of person, you'll hate this book, although you need to read it more than most people, to develop some perspective on our country. I had heard about it for years but never had a copy.I have read through about 1/4 of it so far. Zinn's perspective is always taken from the the standpoint of the people that are doing the suffering for whatever "progress" or event is being described, (for example: Native Americans, or Black Slaves, or working class people) so is not always particularly positive, or pleasant. History and mind control propaganda are akin. this book will help you to be aware we get a skewed perspective from the powers that be.

  • For people who like TRUE NEWS

In this age of Tumpist insanity, this book helps you make sense of an empire founded on corruption, bigotry, exploitation and an American vision of the rich getting richer at any cost. That said, while it is eye opening, there are no surprises here. Men who pursue money and power are usually corrupt and will step on anyone to get their way. God Bless the souls of those destroyed by a Democracy gone wild.

The author has taken the time to give an historical perspective from the point of view of the people who have been victimized by the Imperialists and settlers of this land.

  • One of the Most Important Books for ALL Americans

This is one of the most fascinating books I've ever read, and I recommend it to every one. I'm buying each of my kids a copy and hope you will too. There's more to our history than any of us learned in High School. Now's the time to fill in the blanks. Thank you Howard Zinn!

  • realistic perspective

It shows a side to all conflict in the United States that you don't always get to see, especially accurately. It may be biased and uses inflammatory language at times, but America really was cruel to the Indians who were here before us. The facts tell the truth and are enough, the inflammatory language is unnecessary.

  • A True History of the USA

IF, you can handle the truth, this book is for you. It may be more accurate than some are willing to admit. It IS Fair and Balanced. I do NOT mean it's like FOX news. It's the opposite.
