  • Better product, just make sure your cable provides a clean signal. And hope you like a new interface!

My wife did not like it. She was tied to the Tivo 2/3 interface, the interface is very different. Me I saw it as a huge leap from the Prior tivos we have used. I extensively download programming from my Tivos and unlike the 2/3, this one lets you download the program in minutes and NOT the length of the program like the older tivos. Other issues I did see is that if your cable connection is not the best (like the ones in my house apparently, then you may run into issues with these tivos with more tuners (The Series 5 I received had four tuners), not the fault of the tivo, you can only do so much when you split a signal 4 ways compared to 1 or 2, maybe a amplifier might help (I did not try)) Also the 33% faster playback feature that you can turn on was nice, wish it had more fine grain control over the speed change.

  • Romio ota

The roamio preforms well. Easy set up. Like the menu of available programs, the retrieval of recorded shows is awkward but livable. Although it has nothing to do with the roamio - beware of over the air reception. I am in central Florida - no hills - and a station that has decent reception one day may have crummy reception at night when you want to record a show. This unit will preform best with a high dollar antenna mounted outside. My wall mount inside antenna is not reliable.

  • Great Value purchase

Older TiVo Hi-Def DVR with multi (4) tuners. Excellent recording capability and I have found TiVo support to be one of the BEST Tech Support teams I have worked with so really easy setup. I see at least 4 newer generation boxes for sale so the price point on these older boxes is excellent and they all do the same thing excepting the "Bolt +" which has 6 tuners and UHD vs HD.

  • not complete

I have spent a week trying to get the unit to come up through my cable provider. Tivo has responded that the problem appears to be on the provider side, provider says its on the tivo side. Typical. The unit looked to be in good condition, but won't complete the sync so really can't say its good - could be in the firmware - which is what I suspect as my provider had no problem syncing the m-card, the unit doesn't complete the boot up though. I'll probably give it another try, see if I can get a more knowledgable support person - I doubt it's their side since they supply and sync tivo units daily. Maybe since the unit isn't supplied by them there is something different in the handshake. If I do get it to complete the boot & sync, I'll make adjustments to this review. The unit appears to be in good condition, no chips in the cover, no scratches (at least that I could see). It starts up, syncs the m-card (provider supplied), gets the guide and such - to this point, right as rain. I checked the drive, it sets it up so I believe the unit is in very good shape.

  • TIVO ROAMIO Works great with XFINITY

This product is great for automatically recording favorite shows for later viewing. It costs less than a an additional cable box, to rent a Cable adapter card from Comcast to connect to the Xfinity cable. 500 GB drive is more than adequate for this purpose, and you can record 4 different shows at the same time. HD is great.

  • amazing machine,

love the commercial skip option. love the search options. great quality recording. The only downside is not being able to record from streaming equipment, like Roku or Amazon fire stick. Not a big deal can still watch those on demand.

  • Good value.

Still has great features for an older model Tivo with Lifetime subscription without paying $$$$.

  • Basically there is no choice when it comes to DVR's thanks to Rovi/TiVo's 'by hook or by crook' sudo monopoly

Unlike the CATV only version of this series (and all of their previous models), this has a cheap, flimsy, plastic case with a poorly placed much smaller muffin fan mounted in the middle of the chassis instead of the rear like ALL other equipment requiring a fan has. That fan is prone to failure (plenty of reference to that if you do a search) requiring replacement by removing the circuit board. The two pluses over previous models are; User replaceable and upgradedable HDD (unlike all previous models) without voiding the warranty and not requiring a complicated 'loading' of a 'image' file to the drive Lower power consumption and something closer to a actual 'standby' state over all previous models (under 14 watts compared to over 33 watts with the S3), but still not under 1 watt (per the EPA), Faster boot time from a power off state (but still slow compared to just about any other electronic device with a O/S). Then there is their overly overprice "Lifetime service" at $550 (except if you choose monthly or get some kind of 'deal') to have a fully operational device with the 'Guide' data and all functions intact.

  • The best TV box solution

I love it. I am slightly regretful that I didn't pony up for the pro model, which includes streaming to tablets and a remote control finder, but I am so happy with this that I would find it difficult to go back to a standard cable box.

  • Tivos rock. Great live-TV and streaming for minimum media costs.

With Tivo, I spend very little on TV programming with access to a massive amount of content. My total internet and TV-programming cost is $49 per month for 100 Mb to 200 Mb of bandwidth. I spend roughly $30 on streaming services. I minimize my streaming costs by subscribing to, unsubscribing from, and resubscribing to streaming's services I like but seldom use. I've used Tivos for years to avoid expensive cable-TV charges. It combines antennas for local broadcast stations with DVR+ streaming by TV-series name, and without having to know which service steams it or which are over-the-air and which are streamed). For an antenna, I recommend Denny's Antenna Service. They sell antennas that work and will answer any questions about how to install use them. TVFool will show you which stations you are likely to receive at your house. The 500 TB Tivo Romio OTAs require a monthly service from Tivo. The 1 TB ones come with a perpetual service license. Also check out Locast with a VPN service. It will give you live broadcasts from most major metropolitan areas in the US (and around the world). I donate $5 to Locast (a non-profit organization). It does not work with Tivo; it supplements Tivo for live broadcast you can't reach with your antenna. For example, you could watch Dodgers home games, Yankees home games, and other programming not available in your area. (Locast is legit. It has been challenged in court and won.) Over-the-air Tivo + streaming + Internet w/o cable-TV costs + Locast = more content than you need.
