  • To Boldly Go

Back into the past when you think all is lost. Whrnrver I junk or recycle s computer I remove the hard drive. Very easy to do...2 screws 2 plugs.. Since 1991 I have 7 hard drives that this unit allows me, through the usb of my newer computer, to retrieve old files I need or old pictures I forgot about. Simple to setup connect and go. I love its ease of use for great access to my old stuff. If you have old hard drives to peruse, this is the unit to use.

  • Restore old data

When Windows OS breaks, sometimes it's just easier to reinstall the OS and the programs. Having an external drive case for old IDE drives has allowed me to save the data from my old Windows XP computer, update to a new machine, and restore all the data that otherwise I might not have been able to retrieve. Great for data recover if the drive itself hasn't failed. Very useful.

  • Product does the job, just a little quirky

The product functions as designed. It provides a USB enclosure for any typical 3.5" IDE drive you may have that allows you to connect it to a PC via USB 2.0. The enclosure holds a drive securely enough using a pair of sliders that you place on the drive using a pair of the screw mount holes on each side. The power and data cables, along with the USB/IDE converter board, are integrated to an end-cap for the enclosure that has a power supply jack, USB type A jack, and a slider on/off switch. Once you slide the drive in the enclosure and connect the power and data cables, it is a small challenge to snap the end cap onto the enclosure. It doesn't use screws. It's not overly difficult, but you just need to be careful as it does not go on easily. The dummy end cap on the other end fits less securely, but it stays. Once it's connected up and powered on it does work right out of the box with Windows 10, Windows 8 or Linux.I have not tried it on any other OS. The power connector is a little finicky. If you handle the unit while it's on, or fiddle with the power connector at all (give it the slightest wiggle), it will be intermittent. It does seem to work reliably if you just "set it and forget it". One other quirk I encountered: I use the drive on Linux mostly. If it's been idle awhile and I try to access the drive, it initially gives an I/O error which seems to correct itself. Overall, I find the device useful. I consider the quirks to be due to it being perhaps one of the cheapest such device I could find in the 3.5-inch drive format. I am going to continue using it unless I find that it has errors that get in my way.

  • Purchased in March, dead by September.

Bought this as an enclosure for an old 320GB Barracuda 7200 IDE drive (ST3320620A) I had in an old PC running Linux off a CD. I mounted the drive the drive in the enclosure, plugged it to a 2.0USB connector on my Win10 PC and formatted it exFAT. I copied about 30GB worth of data to it and in the last five months I have used it about six times, adding files and folders. Yesterday I was backing up more files (about 120 GB of the drive used up) when I got a write error and the drive dropped from the list of available media. It was late so I shut everything down. This morning I rebooted everything and the PC would not recognize the drive. I opened the casing, reset all the connections, etc, and no joy. I removed the drive from the case and connected it to an IDE/SATA to USB connector with its own power source and the disk worked fine.I ran some utilities to verify disk integrity and no errors cropped up. The drive spins up when using the case and the power adapter that came with it, so it looks like the issue is with the IDE/USB controller card. Only a 30 day guarantee and now, five months in, this thing has crapped out -- with MINIMAL use.

  • The drive case is for older HD in 3.5" s...

The drive case is for older HD in 3.5" size. It is easy to assemble it for your left over, older drive. The kit is complete with USB cable and power supply brick. You just needed to add a working, older HD, and it works with USB 2.0 or higher.

  • Poor support from supplier

product provided had a broken plastic support tab and does not power up a drive that works fine in a pc. . supplier blew off first issues about the problem and refused to answer second complaint. this unit is well built but would need to work for a better rating. I want a replacement or a refund!!!!!

  • Great buy you won't be dissapointed.

i bought a sata enlosure,it needed to be srewed to keep the drive stable.this unit is better because the ide interface is one piece (i.e no cable.and the drive is held securely haven't tried the screws yet,but so far a winner all the way.

  • Nice accessory to accommodate older drives lying around after upgrades.

Perfect addition to my older Macs' updated internal hard drives that are now becoming externals. Great for testing, formatting etc. The unit has no screws to deal with, all snap on, snap off plastic parts.
