    Walthers HO Scale Dress-Up Kit Fits Athearn F-7 & F-9 A/B Units (Blue Box)

    This kit from Walthers will dress up any F-7A or B; there's enough grab irons to do 2 engines but only enough glass to do one. So the kit is designed for one F-7A and one F-7B since the B units have no windows, only the 2 or 3 port holes depending on the year manufactured. Now I can add details to my Athearn engines to bring the level up to MRC engines which already have their grab irons and windows in place. I have 5 Athearn engines so I will pick 4 to add details to. I would highly recommend the kit for any modeler who wants to add more realism through detail. Once the details are glued in place they will be quite durable. I haven't broken any grab irons yet and I handle my engines a lot. Happy railroading.

    Details for model locomotives

    This is a detail kit that allows detailing of a model locomotive. It is specifically for an HO Scale EMD F unit. It will work for the whole series from FT to F9. It should work for engines of the E series with round port holes. With modifications, it would work for some others, like the ALCO FA series locos. It has windshield, side windows and potholes for the Athearn Blue Box engines but can be used with other brands. It also has handrails and grab irons formed from wire to replace the molded on grabs on the engines. Drilling and glue is required. Overall, it makes a tremendous difference in appearance in these locomotives. Newer engines often come with separately applied rails and grabs, but for the ones without, they make an incredible upgrade.

    Athearn EMD F7 - F9. A and B unit locomotive detailing kit

    As the description indicates, this is a small package of hand rails and grab irons needed to improve the Detail of the Blue Box version of the venerable and common Athearn HO scale EMD locomotive. The hardest part of the installation is drilling the minute holes needed properly locate the brass wire handholds onto the plastic locomotive chassis. A very time consuming task. But if you can do it, you will be rewarded by a very upgraded looking model locomotive. The wire is very thin and there is quite a bit of it.

    Quality upgrade product for srewart and Athearn ho F units.

    Good quality product for a nice upgrade to the older Srewart and AthearnF unit deisels in HO scale. It is a little tedious and time consuming, but it pays off with a nice looking engine when completed. You will need to carefully paint the handrails and grab irons to match the model prototype equivalent. Just ask yourself if this is a project you are most likely to realistically tackle. I ran mine a little to determine if I would really miss these details enough to be worth the effort, so I will try a couple to see how it goes.

    Needs better detailing

    The wire grabs are perfect. The round side windows could use a bit more detail in the molding as they don’t set into the Athearn shell and slide around. Overall a good product.
