First off, it isn't a Lie Nielsen or a Veritas, so it is more than a $100 cheaper than they are. Which is always a plus. 2nd it is just as pretty as the aforementioned. 3rd it came ready to use right out of the box, after you wiped it down. The cutter or blade is suitably thick and came sharpened and ready to go to work. I have used it to joint a board , smooth a board, plane highly figured maple, cherry, walnut and oak with out any blow out or chip out, it has performed each task at a high level. Been wanting one for a long time, and this one had the right price, and it was new. The only possible flaw is a very slight wiggle in the handle. For those NOT planing molecules.
I didn't check to see if the bottom was flat enough to shave individual atoms off the surface. But this thing does slide like butter over the surface. It can bite deep and it can smooth a table top down. It's not overly heavy, it has great length for jointing most surfaces.
