This Is the Collins Comp You Want
With this 3-Disc version of The Singles, they finally got it right. Collins has been compiled before with Hits, Love Songs and others, but they all have gaping, noticeable exclusions. Even the basic 2-Disc version of this comp is incomplete with regard to major hits. But here, at last, the casual fan will hear everything he or she is looking for, and then some. It may be a bit much for some, but at least it can be said that the less-familiar songs are also of excellent quality and many of them could easily become new favorites. Another difference between this Deluxe package and the 2-disc version is the tracks are presented in chronological order, allowing the listener to hear Collins' development as a writer and performer. The shorter edition has them carefully mixed together for a different listening experience, aimed more at a pleasing-sounding sequence. Which approach is better will largely be a matter of preference, but there's little arguing of the material chosen for the Deluxe package, at any rate. Even the singles from the Tarzan and Brother Bear soundtracks are present, and a great cut from the special Going Back album. So, this is a very satisfying retrospective indeed, and THE place to go if you're looking for an end-all-do-all compilation from one of the 80s and 90s greatest hit makers. About the only complaint that might be made is the package- the three discs are encased in what could now be considered a very old-school, fat "double" jewel box case, with a special center to allow for a third disk. These are fragile and clumsy, and it makes one wonder why they didn't go for a sturdier, more compact and attractive digipack arrangement. Also, the booklet has some nice pics and memorabilia, but no liner notes with career highlights, etc. An anthology like this one, and an artist like Phil Collins, are certainly deserving of this, and it would have been appreciated by fans. Still, it's the music that's most important, and in that department The Singles- Deluxe has the goods. Highly recommended above any other Collins compilation available presently.Read full review
