For me only this JSP set is well recorded and transferred , but it is too much of Charley Patton. Not everything an artist does is equally good to me, and some of it is very average or even below average. For me, that is the case here, and JSP even includes 29 songs from other artists some of which you may not like. I much preferred the single CD by Yazoo called Charlie Patton Founder of the Delta Blues 1929-1934. The recording and transfer is equal to or slightly better than the JSP, and there is no overkill. There is another single CD on the Austrian Wolf label that has an equally good choice of songs as the Yahoo CD, but the recording tranfer has many faults to me. Portions of songs on the Wolf CD seem to suddenly sound as if the voice is coming from a closet. I am guessing that the noise reduction was too great, and I much prefer the clear sound on the Yazoo CD despite the scratches on the old 78rpm records. Yazoo also has a Patton CD called Primeval Blues, Rags, and Gospel that has some great other Patton songs, if you feel too many were left out of the CD above. Remember, that these are my feelings only, and I my listening preferences are for acoustic folk blues, especially with bottleneck or fingerstyle guitar.Read full review
I played my old Yazoo double LP set King of the Blues Singers until they were worn out despite the poor sound and snap, crackle, and pop. I saw this at a super price and immediately purchased upon a discount. If you are a blues fanatic, Charley is the Father and King of the blues. The remastered recordings are much clearer and enjoyable, and also feature other Mississippi Delta performers and the set fits well together as they lived and performed together. This is a bargain and will provide enjoyment and inspiration to musicians and blues aficionados.

Not all tracks on here have Patton on them. The last disc has like 6 songs that are from a vocal group and don't really represent Patton or his style but may have been recorded on the same day. I haven't studied Patton's recording career but I question if this set is truly complete. Other disc's I have say that some tracks have not been found yet. I will study this more and find out myself.
Very good compilation of all the recordings of one of bluesdom's all-time greats. Considering the rarity and sound of the original Paramount and Vocalion recordings, it is quite listenable. A good and smart buy!
