I think it's one of those rare movie classics that live forever. Horses are some of the most beautiful animals on the planet. They have been used in battle and as beasts of burden. But the most appealing feature is their beauty while running, especially when they have a rider on their back. The Black Stallion stands for the best in the breed. In this movie, we see a horse and a young boy who have never been tested. The best part of the movie is the part where the stallion is seen having a bad start in the beginning of the race. But at the final part of the race his strength and the boys endurance show through. It makes your heart beat when you see them come from behind and finally they edge out the lead horse and witn the race. You would have liked to have seen the actual lead distance if they were to race again. It's a good trill to see everytime you see the movie. It's a good film for the whole family. There's no vulgarity in it. I myself would like to see all movies cut back on their trash themes because they give a negative impression and subtly teach a wrong way to live to our society. We need more good movies like these to be produced.Read full review
I remember reading the Black Stallion books when I was in junior high school. Then they made a movie from the story in the first book. The Black Stallion movie is fairly true to Walter Farley's tale. And what's not to love? A young boy takes an adventurous trip home from Arabia, sharing the freighter he's aboard with a nearly wild black Arabian stallion. The ship sinks and the boy and the horse are the only two survivors. They wash up on an uninhabited island and must depend upon each other for their very lives. They develop a bond that only they understand. The boy gentles the horse and is granted the opportunity of the ride of his life on the horse's back. They're finally rescued and travel back to the boy's home in New York. The boy boards the horse at the barn of an old race horse jockey. Henry, the old jockey, played by Mickey Rooney, instructs the boy in riding technique but is surprised by the amazing speed of the black horse. He begins to dream of the race of a lifetime. This is a great family film but somewhat hard to find on the shelves at the local department store. Naturally, eBay was the first place I looked for it. This purchase will be passed along as a birthday gift to a young lady about to turn seven years old. She loves to ride horses and I'm sure she's going to love this film.Read full review
Probably one of the best movies ever made. Often confused with a Disney Film, this a Fancis Ford Coopola film, same exec produce for Apocalypse Now and the God Father series. Movie tracks to the classic Farley book as well as possible and arguably has some of the best cinematic filming quality ever produced. The deserted island scenes are striking to say the least. Definitely not just for kids. The movie deals at an adult level by bringing one back to the feeling that the young have when they act like that certain things are more important than life itself. Alec and the Black are timeless.
It is a story about a young boy and a horse who are shipwrecked together and end up on an island. The boy loses his father in the disaster and then befriends the wild horse who helped him to survive while in the ocean. They bond closely, and become great friends. After they are rescued from the island, the boy is reunited with his mother. Their further adventures take them to meeting the horse racing trainer, Henry Daily...played by Mickey Rooney. After that...it is off to the races! The horse is gorgeous and beautifully trained. The boy, played by Kelly Reno, does a wonderful job of acting....as do the other actors. It is a very rewarding film. I decided to buy it because I wanted to do so years ago, and life got in the way! I suddenly thought of it and tracked it down! Hooray!
One of the most impressive film productions I've seen. It's by Francis Ford Coppola. Every shot is "perfect"; no shot is transitional, throwaway fluff. It's all art. Best of all is the scene of the boy and the horse on the beach. Second best is the 3-horse race (that goes on for about 12 miles on a circular [one mile] track). Great cinema license to tell a great comeback scene. The boy (Alec) played by Kelly Reno is so natural as an actor, you think he's merely playing himself in this story. His love and interaction with the Black Stallion will make horse lovers teary. Even Mickey Rooney escapes his typical comedic film roles and comes across as an engaged and committed father-trainer to Alec.

I decided to purchase this DVD for my kids because my oldest saw this movie in class after they read the book as a class during their library time. My 2nd child also read this book as a class during their library time. They both loved the book and my oldest loved the movie. We borrowed it from the library and we feel it is a good, clean movie that, in my opinion, is a true classic. If anyone has read the book, and likes to watch classic movies, I would recommend purchasing this movie. I bought the DVD instead of the VHS because we are trying to phase out all of our VHS tapes so eventually we'll only have DVD's. We are very pleased with our purchase.
Very pleased with delivery. I enjoyed the movie very much. Brought back good memories of my childhood. A memorable time. Pleased to see it available to the public. Thank you, Reginald
