ReviewsIn this graphic novel series, the stories are mostly conveyed through speech bubbles and clearly demarcated text boxes. The visual style is rich and evocative. A scene of a war battle in Amsterdam includes inset close-up illustrations of participants and bystanders. Some text-only narrative includes biography and related topics (for example, "Italy in the Renaissance" or "South Africa and Apartheid"), as well as an overview of the subject's portrayal in film. Complex stories are sometimes compressed. Mandela's first marriage, divorce, and then remarriage occur within a few pages. Some of the detail in Francis will be incomprehensible to non-Catholics. Each text includes discussion questions and writing prompts. A limited number of books are also cited for additional reading, but no sources are listed. VERDICT Generally solid introductions to historical figures, particularly for more visual learners, though less useful for research., The essence of Anne's diary comes through in an effective and even poignant way. . . .Throughout this book, art and text are balanced nicely; both are equally compelling. The reader thus becomes immersed in the story. . . .Anne Frank can be useful to introduce the Holocaust to young readers or to complement other materials., These graphic novels detail the lives of the titular historical figures, with emphasis on events that garnered each the most notoriety. The comic-book format makes the volumes feel more like stories than typical biographies, which may appeal to reluctant history readers., The word "graphic" in the title of this book series refers to more than simply the style of illustration. In this case, it refers as well to the truth, drama, and dread which inform these wonderfully expressive pages that retell Anne Frank's story in an entirely new way. The reader is not merely told about the Frank family, but is made to feel they're sharing the hiding place along with them. . . .Excellent resources about the history of the time and place are included as backmatter for further study. Highly recommended...

SynopsisWhen she turned thirteen years old, Anne received a gift that would change her life: a personal diary. In it, she expressed her desires, fears and hopes while living in confinement with her family during World War II. After the war, despite her early death, her diary became a shocking testimony about the persecution of Jewish people, and an invaluable contribution to the fight for human rights.
