In THE DEMON AWAKENS, bestselling author R. A. Salvatore creates an astonishing new world for readers to explore--and an intrepid hero to lead the way: Elbryan Wynden, who must confront the dark tides of destiny in his epic search for justice and peace . . . A great evil has awakened in the land of Corona, a terrible demon determined to spread death and misery. His goblin armies and fearsome giants ravage the settlements of the frontier, and in the small village of Dundallis their merciless attack leaves behind two shattered orphans: Pony and her lifelong friend, the youth Elbryan. Taken in by elves, Elbryan is raised to become a formidable ranger--a fateful role that will lead him into harrowing confrontation. Meanwhile, on a far-off island, a shower of gemstones will fall onto the black sand shores. These heaven-sent stones carry within them an incredible power--the key to all that is good in the world and all that is evil, and it is up to one young monk to liberate them from the corrupt monastery that harvests them. Pray that they don't fall into the wrong, clawed hands . . .

I've read R.A. Salvatore since I was in grade school.
They are the only books I have wanted to collect 1st edition hard backs for, or to drive to a book signing and add to their value.
R.A. Salvatore has written a lot of books, and Demon Awakens really shows some of the avenues of writing that he didn't get to go into much detail with his Dark Elf Saga about Drizzt Du'Urden.
He must have been younger writing these, because he paints society as a corrupted black mass that pulses underneath the signs of normalsy. That behind closed doors of even the most sacred of instuitions, that greed, and treachery can be evident. It is hard to be a good person in Corona, and this all leads toward the end product. An awakening of a great enemy to order and justice. The great Demon Dactyl. The first book does a great service in introducing the characters in semi-believable ways, and paints a rose light on the reunited Pony and Elbryan.
From here Salvatore got to express his love of natural races and Rangers as a whole. Drizzt was a Ranger yes, but he was a Warrior first. Elbryan takes his role as a Ranger much further than done with our favorite Dark elf.
Also introducing a new magic system, quite unbalancing in a game standpoint, but I got the campaign setting books, long before I got to read the books.
With less than 50 pages left of the first book remaining. I would recommend this to anyone that is a fan of Salvatore's work. To get a glimpse to his early ramblings outside of the pious Cadderly, or the Stalwart Drizzt. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. And get me a good deal on some hardbacks in good condition! :D
