I’m a lifelong video game player (in my late 30’s) and I do not typically play turn-based RPGs. However, the graphics, music, story, combat system and multiple characters all combine to make Octopath Traveler a compelling piece worthy of your gaming hours. The combat system is easy to catch onto, the enemies come in several varieties, and you have the option to fight in a party or alone. The 8 characters involved also have their own stories and purposes for existing, with none feeling like a repeat of another. Finally, the graphics and music coalesce to produce an atmosphere found in few other games of any genre. Taken together, the team at Square Enix has produced a game that is a must-play for RPG fans and can only be classified as a “Winner” of a game.
Wow! An RPG that is challenging and presents the player with options and paths? Yes please!
Just to be fair, this is more 'old school' than most modern RPGs, but it is a wonderfully fun and challenging game. Your characters all have interesting stories, and you get to play through them all if you like. Of course there is very little interaction between the characters, and in this regard the game is very similar to Saga Frontier games - only this game has an excellent battle system.
Unlike Bravely Default (with a battle system that started out fun and then became tedious), this game has a system where you seek enemy weaknesses to cause them to miss a turn - very much like Shin Megami Tensei games. Boss battles can be long and require strategy.
You have the option to skip through story scenes, so on replay it is much quicker.
Also I really prefer the original Japanese voices - and thankfully there is an option to use the Japanese with subtitles.
This is a wonderful game, a lot of fun, very artistic and challenging. It is not a near perfect old school RPG game like Shin Megami Tensei IV or Persona 5, but this is a worthy purchase for fans of classic RPGs or new fans interested in a classic style RPG.Read full review
This game truly is something else. I was looking for a game to get lost in. I wanted the feeling of days seeming like minutes. I have not felt that since Breath of the Wild. This game gave me that feeling, and I must say it is one of the best games on the switch. If you are hesitant because of the graphical style do not be; this is a full fledged title that lasts at least 60 hours to complete. I highly recommend it.
Endearing visuals, engaging battle system, beautiful sound track, multiple story lines to follow.
Granted, Some of the story lines are more interesting than others but that is what makes this game great. You have 8 characters to choose from, you can add the ones you like the most to your party and just focus on them. You will be hooked for long hours.
Very unique story telling style, through all 8 characters. The different characters varying skills and abilities keep you wanting to continue leveling to see how the next skill will work! I have sunk quite a few hours into this game, and am nowhere near the end. Just taking my time, enjoying all the awesome side quests and beautiful sprite graphics!
